There have been recent reports of new cases of Alabama Rot in our country and we would like to post something about this disease since many of you will probably have questions. Alabama Rot Disease is scientifically known as cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy and affects only dogs. The cause of this disease is still not known and it is currently being investigated. This disease can cause redness, sores or swelling of the skin, particularly on the dogs’ face or limbs. Within 7 days, affected dogs can develop life threatening acute kidney failure, at which stage they may be vomiting and lethargic. Although this disease is scary and serious, it is not common. Most of the times a skin problem will not be caused by Alabama Rot Disease and even if the skin lesions are caused by it, many dogs will not develop kidney problems and will have a full recovery. Since the cause of this disease is unknown no preventive measures can be recommended. Please keep in mind that dogs treated in the early stages of this disease are more likely to have a better prognosis, so if your dog has unexplained skin lesions anywhere in his or her body bring him or her to the vet.

Cats are naturally nocturnal animals. This means that for them it is quite normal to sleep during the day and be more active at night. Our daily routines can also contribute to this. Although most cats will adapt their schedule to spend more time with their owners, which means they will try to spend more time awake during the day, in most households owners go to work and are out during the day. Cats will then spend the daytime hours resting, especially if he or she is the only pet in the household. For many cats the day begins when you get home to provide food, play time and social interaction. When your cat attempts to wake you after you’ve gone to bed, he or she may want to play, eat or simply enjoy your company. If you would rather avoid having your cat trying to wake you at night you can try to gradually alter the cat’s schedule by encouraging play time and feeding during the daytime and earlier evening hours. You can also provide the cat with a warm and comfortable bed away from your bedroom and close your bedroom door at night. Avoid any activities that might encourage your cat to be up at night and reward all interaction in earlier hours. If you need any help managing your cat’s behavior do not hesitate to contact us.
