Years 3-12 enjoyed a very hot and sunny annual House Challenge Day last Thursday. All pupils involved put together some excellent songs, House Hakas and Dragon’s Den pitches. The standard was really high and it was wonderful to see different age groups working collaboratively. In the afternoon, pupils participated in quizzes around the School. Thank you to all staff and pupils for their enthusiasm and effort.

Congratulations to Matthieu and Anango for their recent mathematics achievement. Both Clifton High pupils gained Gold Awards in the UKMT Junior Mathematics Challenge in April where their scores were high enough to qualify them for the prestigious Junior Kangaroo Challenge. 5,700 pupils took part in this challenge nationally. A score of 87 out of 135 was required to rank in the top 25% and gain a Merit. Matthieu was very close, with an excellent score of eighty and a participation certificate. Anango was around tenth position among the 4,700 people who took part, with an incredible score of 124 (nearly full marks)! He gains his Merit certificate, and at 4 years younger than the normal age of participation, Anango certainly has a very bright future in Mathematics. Well done to both pupils!

This spring, Eco Club Juniors have been busy on sunny mornings tending to the eco garden which supports insect-friendly flowers, healthy pond balance and slow worm habitats. Mr Walmsley’s ducks were put into the pond to eat some of the weed and the group have also been learning how to care for the ducklings. Eco Club Juniors also moved tanks into the new eco room to set up habitats for the axolotl, Bubbles, and some fish. Finally, pupils introduced children in the playground to Mr Walmsley’s tame Jay so they would recognise it in the wild. The jay is one of the most intelligent birds in the UK, whose hoarding habits of acorns are responsible for some 80% of our oak trees.

Year 7 pupils visited the Wildplace project on Tuesday 4th July where they participated in several activities. The high ropes tested their courage with ladders, walls, a ginormous swing and the dreaded ‘Leap of Faith’! All of the pupils conquered their fears by demonstrating some very nifty climbing skills. Pupils also had the opportunity to hold a Madagascan cockroach and discover the many animals at the Wildplace Project. A very enjoyable day – thank you to Miss Widdison for organising the visit.
