We are a Swiss Inter-faculty team participating in the worldwide Hyperloop competition organized by SpaceX to prove this concept. The idea of the so-called Hyperloop was unveiled by SpaceX founder Elon Musk back in 2013. It proposes a novel high-speed ground system allowing you to travel from Zürich to Berlin in 40 minutes. As neither SpaceX nor Tesla is developing a commercial Hyperloop themselves, they announced an open competition, gearing towards university students to design and construct the best Hyperloop pod. To support this competition SpaceX is constructing a one-mile test track, where the university teams are able to test their human scale pods.

- Competition

There are two judging phases in the competition: a design competition that will be held at the start of 2017 and an on-track competition to be held later in 2017. The competition is open to participants globally, although all judging will occur in the United States.
There was already a first promising round of competitions this year, which lead SpaceX to announce a second installment of the competition commencing in fall 2016. The second competition will be judged solely on one criteria: maximum speed with successful deceleration (i.e. without crashing).
Despite its relatively short-lived existence, the excitement about the revolutionary Hyperloop has amassed quite some attention among students in particular in the US, where student teams such as from Princeton, MIT and UC Berkeley are currently participating. However, also European teams such as from Delft University or the TU München can be found among the teams leading the charge in this year’s competition.

- Team

Our team is gathering the best Swiss students of physics, mathematics, computer science and, most prominently, of electric, mechanical- and civil engineering. In close collaboration with Swiss higher education institution like ETH Zürich, we aim to research the Hyperloop concept and invigorate Switzerland's pioneering mobility spirit.

- Why we need to do it?

We think that the ground travelling of today is ready for the next upgrade: a means of transport that revolutionizes the idea of how we connect and shape opportunity in today’s globalized world. We want to innovatively support this endeavor with our ideas and to partake in building a sustainable future. Last but not least, the student competition also offers the exceptional opportunity to interact and learn from other engaged students from various cultural and social backgrounds. In the hopes of reciprocating ETH’s academic and financial support, we are eager to see ETH among the other participating universities at the forefront of this next unstoppable revolution in transportation.
