Anyone interested in human osteology? Take a look at Paleoanthropology international programme at BIAFS-2017: The programme aims to equip both students and younger archaeologists with an understanding of the research approaches to paleoanthropological data analysis. The programme includes lectures on critical issues of palaeoanthropology. The workshop sessions that constitute the core of the programme aim to develop practical skills through the analysis of cranial, dental and postcranial human remains. Our pottery Kilns has successfully survived the winter and it means we are getting ready for History of Ceramics international program this summer: History of Ceramics The program focuses on Prehistoric ceramics through ‘historic and cultural approach’, including structural analysis of pottery production, methods of shaping, decorating, glazing and firing. The program also includes lectures and workshops on statistical processing and microscopy, while experimental sessions aim to equip students with an understanding of several basic prehistoric pottery techniques, including preparation of clay bodies, pottery shaping, decoration, and firing. Learning through experiments? This is exactly how our Experimental Archaeometallurgy works! Experimental Archaeometallurgy This program aims to provide the students with an opportunity to conduct their own experiments on non-ferrous metallurgy techniques under the supervision of experienced archaeometallurgists. The program includes several group experimental sessions introducing the basics of non-ferrous metalworking, smelting, and casting. The experimental sessions are accompanied by lectures on archaeometallurgy studies and non-ferrous metallurgy and metalworking history. Archaeology and Linguistics lectures will focus on the issue of coordination between these two disciplines illustrated by several case studies of Prehistoric Eastern Europe and Western Siberia. We are receiving many questions on paper submission issues for applying for BIAFS-2017. Here are the answers for these FAQs: Q: Can I apply for BIAFS programms without submitting a paper? A: Yes. However, in this case, you are not able to recieve a certificate of additional training. The paper submission, as well as a presentation at BIAFS Final Conference, are the requirements of Kazan Federal University that issue certificates of additional training. Q: Can I apply now without a paper and send a paper later? A: Yes. You can send your paper up to 01/06/2017. In this case, you can attach your CV/abstract of your paper instead of full paper to the application form: http://archtat.ru/en/arch-school/apply/applicationform/ This is probably the best option for those, who is worried of arranging Russian visa and airfare earlier. Q: I do not need a certificate of additional training. How I can apply for BIAFS? A brand-new international interdisciplinary program at BIAFS-2017: Textile Archaeology: Dress and Society This program aims to provide students with an understanding of methods and approaches to the history of dress studies based on archaeological records. The program focuses on the interpretation of social means of dress as far as it is possible to analyze through archaeological studies. Specific examples of archaeological artifacts from various regions of Europe and Caucuses will be illustrating the topics studied, including the case studies of Ancient Rus and Merovingian dress, as well as the dress of early Medieval population of Northern Caucasus and Crimea. BIAFS-2017 Final International Youth Conference on Interdisciplinary Research in Archaeology: Registration Open Kazan Federal University, Khalikov Institute of Archaeology and Bolgar State Museum-Reserve are jointly organizing an International Youth Conference on Interdisciplinary Research in Archaeology to be held from August 31 to September, 2017. Location: Bolgar State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve, Bolgar, Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. BIAFS International Youth Conference aims to promote the involvement of the youth in Eurasian cultural heritage studies and conservation. Although the conference encompasses a wide range of disciplines related to cultural heritage studies, it has its special focus set on archaeology and archaeological heritage conservation. The conference is held since 2014 as a concluding event of Bolgar International Archaeological Field School (BIAFS). The 2017 edition of the conference is devoted to interdisciplinary approach in archaeology and cultural heritage studies will be open for participation for a wide range of young professional regardless their participation in BIAFS.  Conference sessions: Session1. Multidisciplinary research in archaeology. Session 2. Field recording and post processing techniques. Session 3. Archaeometry: artefacts, materials and technologies. The working languages of the conference are English and Russian. Eligibility: BIAFS International Youth Conference is open for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, regardless of nationality. Recent graduates up to the age of 35 are also welcome. Visa support for non-Russian nationals is provided, where required. Registration fees: $50 (covers Moscow-Kazan-Moscow transfer and visa support for internationals). Kazan-Bolgar-Kazan transfer, food and accommodation is provided for free by Bolgar State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve, Khalikov Institute of Archaeology and Kazan Federal University.
