The Nordic Sound by Lindberg Lyd in stereo and surround with Pure Audio Blu-ray and HiRes music files. 32 American GRAMMY-nominations. www.2L.no The music captured by 2L features Norwegian composers and performers and an international repertoire reflected in the Nordic atmosphere. The surround sound recordings of Lindberg Lyd not only transform the entire listening experience, but also - more radically - these innovative recordings overturn some very basic concepts regarding how music is played and even composed. 2L emphasize surround sound with Pure Audio Blu-ray and HiRes file distribution, and have garnered no less than 32 American GRAMMY nominations since 2006, 24 of these in categories Best Engineered Album, Best Surround Sound Album and Producer of the Year

2L record in spacious acoustic venues: large concert halls, churches and cathedrals. This is actually where we can make the most intimate recordings. The qualities we seek in large rooms are not necessarily a big reverb, but openness due to the absence of close reflecting walls. Making an ambient and beautiful recording is the way of least resistance. Searching the fine edge between direct contact and openness - that’s the real challenge! A really good recording should be able to bodily move the listener. This core quality of audio production is made by choosing the right venue for the repertoire, and by balancing the image in the placement of microphones and musicians relative to each other in that venue.

There is no method available today to reproduce the exact perception of attending a live performance. That leaves us with the art of illusion when it comes to recording music. As recording engineers and producers we need to do exactly the same as any good musician: interpret the music and the composer’s intentions and adapt to the media where we perform. Surround sound is a completely new conception of the musical experience. Recorded music is no longer a matter of a fixed two-dimensional setting, but rather a three-dimensional enveloping situation. Stereo can be described as a flat canvas, while surround sound is a sculpture that you can literally move around and relate to spatially; surrounded by music you can move about in the aural space and choose angles, vantage points and positions.

Schola Cantorum, Trachea | The Vinyl Anachronist | Part-Time Audiophile

Part-Time Audiophile: «Trachea, from the Norwegian choral group Schola Cantorum and their conductor Tone Bianca Sparre Dahl, seems like the latest “voices-in-a-church” release from 2L Recordings, something very much in line without other recent titles such as Veneliti and Himmelborgen. A few minutes in, you’ll start to notice some fundamental differences. First of all, you’ll notice unusual accompaniment to these otherwise ethereal voices, something that leans heavily into the secular. Trachea, which obviously refers to the windpipe as a “source of transformation where the breath of a human being can be refined into the most beautiful, powerful, tender art,” is all about singing for the joy of it, the joy of making one monumental and moving sound. These voices in a church, something Morten Lindberg of 2L captures better than almost anyone else, are indeed pure and mystical and gorgeously rendered, but Trachea is about the juxtapositions of these sounds against sometimes contradictory musical instruments–the violin in Bjørn Kåre Odde‘s Snilla Patea, and the four sinister horns in Martin Ødegaard’s title track, for example. These instruments are what leads the Schola Cantorum away from the inspirational hymns from those other releases, suggesting that there’s more to witness in the world–even from the warm, comforting space of a Norwegian church. That’s not to say the Schola Cantorum is focused on the horizon beyond the grounds of the church. For every piece that’s devoted to earthy endeavors–Bjorn Morten Christophersen’s Oak and Mayfly, for instance, is based on a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale–there is something more fitting in the program such as Frøy Aagre’s Gloria. Trachea is less concerned, however, with the source of the celebration of the human voice than with the sound itself, sweeping and exciting and impressive for anyone lucky enough to be in the vicinity at the time. As usual, you can ignore the richer subtexts as you see fit so that you can enjoy that incredible, expansive presence of Schola Cantorum. If you’ve delved into the 2L catalog, you know that a big church with open beam ceiling made from timber results in the kind of musical experience that’s not often captured elsewhere. The mood in Trachea is sometimes less optimistic than with the releases that focus on the heavens, but that’s the thrill. A choir in a church is something that has persevered for many centuries because it is a source of transformation, and Tracheacaptures that perfectly.» — September 2, 2019 by Marc Phillips in The Vinyl Anachronist and Part-Time Audiophile Album details: www.2L.no/pages/album/154.html Pure Audio Blu-ray and Hybrid SACD on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RM4LDJM Listen on streaming services, including MQA: https://orcd.co/trachea DXD stereo and surround sound 2L Native DSD Music https://2l.nativedsd.com/albums/2L154-trachea

Roy Ervin Solstad, 28. august 2019 Albumdetaljer: www.2L.no/pages/album/154.html Lytt i strømmetjenestene: https://orcd.co/trachea

VENELITI - Klassiskmusikk.com

Klassiskmusikk.com: «Veneliti is a choral suite of arrangements of Norwegian songs, hymns and ballads dating from the medieval period to the nineteenth century, arranged by Ørjan Matre, who provides a Forspill, Mellomspil and Etterspil to complete the whole. It takes its name from the second and most substantial number, the eight-minute-long “bergtakingsvisene” telling of the abduction (and seduction?) of the young girl Veneliti by the Mountain King. The Veneliti movement is a fine example where mere arrangement crosses over into recomposition, showing a creative subtlety and complexity normally absent from folksong. What follows Veneliti is a sequence of funeral hymns, dances (including a springar) and songs. None relate directly to the story of the abducted girl yet in their indirect way might be held to reflect the emotions and situations of those who had known her in the wake of her abduction. Thus, the funeral songs (especially Und mig, Gud) may express the grief at her loss, the springer, Rustemannlåtten—allegedly—the song of one of the Mountain King’s minions, and so on. Matre’s compositional interventions are restrained but all the more powerful for that, whether in the use of polyphony, his moving, wordless Mellomspil or the combination of his own tune with a traditional one in Herrens venner. It is a shame that Matre does not list Veneliti amongst his Vocal and Choral works on his website, https://orjanmatre.no/vocal-music-choir/, as it is a work of refinement and considerable craft. Once again, as with the Concerto for Orchestra, it confirms that he is a musical thinker on a big scale. (A symphony will be a tantalising prospect.) The final, climactic setting of the ‘evening song’ Nu dagens lys is little short of a tour-de-force and brings the suite to a vibrant conclusion. It is spectacularly well sung by Oslo Kammerkor (mind you, I would expect nothing less) and 2L's sound is superb.» — Guy Rickards, August 19, 2019 Album details: www.2L.no/pages/album/153.html Pure Audio Blu-ray and Hybrid SACD on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SBCM4HK Listen on streaming services, including MQA: https://orcd.co/veneliti DXD stereo and surround sound 2L Native DSD Music https://2l.nativedsd.com/albums/2L153-veneliti

— Johannes Strom, Audio Test Magazin, September 2019 Pure Audio Blu-ray web shop: https://pureaudiorecordings.com/product/oslo-kammerkor-veneliti/ https://pureaudiorecordings.com/product/schola-cantorum-trachea/ 2L album details: www.2L.no

Classical CDs Weekly: Bach, Christophersen, Mr McFall's Chamber

The Arts Desk «Bjørn Morten Christophersen understands how streaming has affected music consumption: “some zap and shuffle music online,” while oldsters like me still enjoy listening to an album from beginning to end. Woven Brass is a disc to suit all listening habits, a collection of brass pieces ranging from 33 seconds to 14 minutes in length. They can be enjoyed in isolation. Or, heard in sequence, they form an extended multi-movement work. Christophersen’s little Sentimental Pebbles was the starting point, a melting hymn for trumpet and organ here rescored for brass quintet. Here it's a mellow centrepiece. We get pieces for quintet, trio, and an arresting opener for three trumpets. The writing is so, so idiomatic, and Christophersen’s direct musical language is readily accessible. Trombone glissandi in the little Sliding March sound like distant sirens, and Circo Dodecafonico’s twelve-tone hijinks are witty and lyrical. Trumpeter Jonas Haltia is outstanding in an extended solo Chaconne, and the disc’s disparate threads are knitted together in the final quintet piece, Woven Brass. Quite exceptional, and one of the best and most arresting brass discs I've ever heard. The playing, each musician drawn from the Oslo-Filharmonien, is stellar. Production values are very high too; 2L’s fiendishly advanced recording process is outlined in the booklet, and there’s a bonus Pure Audio Blu-ray disc. Which wouldn't matter if the results weren't intensely musical too. Listen with closed eyes and you can visualise exactly where the players are sitting.» — Graham Rickson, Saturday, 24 August 2019 2L album details: www.2L.no/pages/album/143.html Pure Audio Blu-ray + Hybrid SACD on Amazon.com: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07894WWZJ Platekompaniet: https://platekompaniet.no/cd/christophersen-woven-brass/ Listen on streaming services, including MQA: https://orcd.co/woven-brass Extreme Resolution Download Services, including MQA: highresaudio.com https://www.highresaudio.com/album/view/qv7b3f/oslo-philharmonic-brass-bjrn-morten-christophersen-woven-brass e-onkyo music Japan https://www.e-onkyo.com/music/album/twl143/ HDtracks https://www.hdtracks.com/bjorn-morten-christophersen-woven-brass-542013 Sony Select China http://hi-resmusic.sonyselect.kuke.com/page/areaAndAlbums.html?areaid=1 DXD stereo and surround sound 2L Native DSD Music https://2l.nativedsd.com/albums/2L143-bjorn-morten-christophersen-woven-brass

SKAZKI - piano works by Nikolai Medtner (2L-156-SACD) Gunnar Sama

Medtner's music fascinates and surprises, in the midst of what also seems to be well known. You may imagine that you have heard the melodies before, in childhood or in a dream. But, even if you haven’t, it is as if you have been waiting for this music to return. In some mysterious way, it evokes the memory of the unheard. He named many of his piano pieces SKAZKA – tale. Some of them carry subtitles, but it is uncertain whether the composer had specific narratives in mind, as the name would suggest. The influential Soviet musicologists Boris Asafyev may have been right when he claimed that "these are not descriptive tales or tales that illustrate an event. These are tales of personal experiences – of conflicts in the inner life of man". In this recording, Gunnar Sama plays five of Medtner's albums, composed over the course of some 30 years. Nikolai Medtner (1880–1951) - Quatre Morceaux, Op. 4 - Drei Novellen, Op. 17 - Skazki, Op. 35 - Skazki ,Op. 42 - Drei Hymnen an die Arbeit, Op. 49 - When roses fade, Op. 36 No. 3 2L album details: www.2L.no/pages/album/156.html Hybrid SACD on Amazon.com: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W6CDN45 Platekompaniet: https://platekompaniet.no/cd/skazki/ Listen on streaming services, including MQA: https://orcd.co/skazki Extreme Resolution Download Services, including MQA: highresaudio.com https://www.highresaudio.com/album/view/yzeewe/gunnar-sama-skazki e-onkyo music Japan https://www.e-onkyo.com/music/album/twl156/ HDtracks https://www.hdtracks.com/skazki-844015 Sony Select China http://hi-resmusic.sonyselect.kuke.com/page/areaAndAlbums.html?areaid=1 DXD stereo and surround sound 2L Native DSD Music https://2l.nativedsd.com/albums/2L156-skazki

Oslo Kammerkor, Veneliti | The Vinyl Anachronist | Part-Time Audiophile

In terms of choral performances, the Oslo Kammerkor and their performance of Ørjan Matre‘s Veneliti is very different than the last 2L Recording I reviewed, Himmelborgen. In that recording, the Uranienborg Vokalensemble chose works that re-define and build on traditional hymns, while Veneliti comes from the opposite direction, a re-working of folk music. The music from Matre, of course, takes a dream-like approach to the sound of a choral in the prerequisite Norwegian church, but this time the voices are allowed to float and blend into something more surreal than “And when this flesh and heart shall fail.” Veneliti has a secular feel that’s still a bit haunting, still suggestive of mystical forces that drive the singers’ emotions. “The music you are about to listen to has been on a long journey before it finally reaches your ears,” the liner notes explain. Matre has spent his life listening to folk traditions, and he is especially interested in how a specific voice can change the meaning and core of the song. For that reason he has carefully matched the members of Oslo Kammerkor with the the song by listening to old recordings. Couple that with the fact that the Oslo Kammerkor singers tend to learn songs by ear, and not sheet music, and the individual translations–as well as the corresponding arrangements from Matre–become looser and more intuitive. That means each one of these brief folk translations has been curated in a way for maximum impact, more musically than mathematically. Perhaps that’s why this beautiful music is so listenable. These are mostly unknown to listeners who did not grow up with Norwegian folk traditionals and yet there’s a calm, sensible feel to the songs. They just fit, in a way. They make sense. Oslo Kammerkor and Orjan Matre and conductor Håkon Daniel Nystedt have worked hard to present this seemingly casual precision to Veneliti–it would be a nice story if all the people in that church on that day just winged it and everything surpassed expectations. In the real world everyone practiced, learned these folk songs backwards and forwards until the secret keys were found and employed. A lot of things could have happened–Veneliti could be messy, chaotic or indulgent. Instead, the Oslo Kammerkor know how to apply consistence to these folk songs and the entire program blends into a whole. That’s amazing since these songs come from so many places and so many times. In lesser hands, this recording might have been more challenging and thorny around its edges, but 2L Recordings’ Morten Lindberg knows how to record and choral work in a big wooden church better than just about anybody. Veneliti is beautiful music, in the most inspiring way, and its long journey to your ears adds depth to the story.» — August 14, 2019 by Marc Phillips in The Vinyl Anachronist and Part-Time Audiophile Magazine Album details: www.2L.no/pages/album/153.html Pure Audio Blu-ray and Hybrid SACD on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SBCM4HK Listen on streaming services, including MQA:: https://orcd.co/veneliti DXD stereo and surround sound 2L Native DSD Music https://2l.nativedsd.com/albums/2L153-veneliti

2L Recordings' Himmelborgen | The Vinyl Anachronist | Part-Time Audiophile

Part-Time Audiophile: «2L Recordings‘ Himmelborgen consists of three very familiar elements–pipe organ, choir and church. Yes, hymns are being sung. This beautiful recording should remind you of being in church on an early Sunday morning, provided you belong to a large and popular church that has a big enough budget to hire a top-notch musical director and gifted musicians. Of course, being in Norway has something to do with this experience since everything is sung in that language. But 2L Recordings is not a typical record label, and Himmelborgen as far from an ordinary church service. First of all, 2L Recordings’ Himmelborgen features fifteen hymns that sound familiar, but take off on unexpected tangents. The melodies are often based upon existing hymns such as Johann Sebastian Bach’s O hode, høyt forhånet as well as Brahms and Hans Hassler’s takes on the same piece of music. Modern composers Marcus Paus, Marianne Reidarsdatter Eriksen and Bjørn Morten Christophersen has used these standards to produce new meditations on faith to enhance the idea that hymn books are living, breathing entities that evolve over time. Himmelborgen, therefore, will sound utterly comforting to you while rewarding your attention with fascinating new ideas. Those three initial elements should be expected by anyone who loves these fascinating 2L Recordings. Producer Morten Lindberg usually records in Norwegian churches because of the warm, spacious acoustics. Here he uses one of his favorites, the Uranienborg Church, and its resident choir, the Uranienborg Vokalensemble. (Elisabeth Holte serves as conductor.) This church is located in central Oslo, but hundreds of years ago it was a rural area, dark, which became perfect for residents to come and gaze at the stars–or the heavens, depending upon your beliefs. This piece of history sets the mood for this exquisite recording. The pipe organ, for me, is the star of 2L Recordings’ Himmelborgen. Kåre Nordstoga delivers a truly soulful yet mystical performance. During Doug White’s The Voice That Is! event earlier this summer, Brian Zolner and John Marks discussed how important it is to preserve the pipe organ’s sound as an immense, three-dimensional experience. The instrument itself is large, so each note should come from a different physical location. Morten Lindberg figured out how to capture this image a long time ago, but if you want to experience the sheer size of a pipe organ, and not just the impact of those low frequencies, this is an ideal recording. If you’re just interested in meditating or reflecting upon your life, this will set you on the right course as well» — August 2019 by Marc Phillips 2L album details: www.2L.no/pages/album/149.html Listen on streaming services, including MQA: https://orcd.co/himmelborgen DXD stereo and surround sound Native DSD Music: https://2l.nativedsd.com/albums/2L149-himmelborgen Pure Audio Blu-ray and Hybrid SACD on Amazon.com: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P87XMRQ
