Mkinvartsveri/Kazbek (5034m) NE-SW Traverse

This traverse (without skis) of Mkinvartsveri is an exciting alternative to the normal route, leading you to the rarerly ascented, remote NE (Devdorak) side of the mountain. In 2013, a team of Georgian climbers, Trevor Hunt and I were the first people to ascent this route since 20 years. A long, moderatlely difficult ridge (some short sections of rope may be required) and then a steep (40+°) ice/snow face leads to the summit. We then go over the summit and follow the normal route down to Bethlemi hut. I have summited Mkinvartsveri 4 times, including via this route, and made several first ski descents of routes on that mountain. Mkinvartsveri is one of the most beautiful mountains in the Caucasus and the 7th highest mountain in Caucasus. Details: Day 1: Transfer from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi). Day 2: Travel to Tsdo village, ascent to 3600m. Day 3: Ascent to 4000m, return to tent camp. Day 4: Summit day and descent via normal route to Bethlemi Hut. Day 5: Return to Stepantsminda and Tbilisi. Day 6: Reserve day or extra day for acclimatisation. This tour involves sections to over 40 degrees and requires good mountaineering experience, experience using crampons and ice axe, and fitness to carry a large, multi-day backpack over several days and over the summit. Maximum group size is 2 people due to the complexity of the route. Dates are approximate and can be adjusted to the group. More details coming soon, but contact me now if you are interested.

AST1+ avalanche course Gudauri/Tbilisi (Georgia)

The first AST1+ avalanche course in Georgia! The AST1+ is a beginners avalanche course for recreational skiers and snowboarders travelling in avalanche terrain, who have some basic training and little experience. The course combines two practical field days with one indoor day with theory and review, based on a curriculum established by Avalanche Canada. The course comprises an regular AST1, with an additional practical day focused on managing avalanche terrain ("MAT"). The curriculum covers the basics of avalanche formation and release, avalanche terrain, and the steps required to plan and carry out a backcountry trip. You also learn how to use appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain and how to carry out a companion rescue. Upon completion you receive an AST1 + MAT certificate. - Course costs: to be determined - Minimum to maximum nr of participants: 2 to 5 (to guarantee a good instructor : student ratio) - Location: Gudauri, Georgia (Caucasus). Theory day may be held in Tbilisi. - Gear: Touring skis, splitboard or snowshoe/snowboard, appropriate clothing, and avalanche rescue gear: beacon, shovel, probe. Beacon must be current 3-antenna device. Do not have that? Contact me, we will organize it. - Language: English. Georgian translator can be arranged. - An AST2 will be offered in addition soon. If you need gear, contact me, I have a spare rescue kit. To sign up or more information: simply send me (Peter or PS Avalanche Consulting & Training) a message.

Mkinvartsveri/Kazbek (5034m) Ski Tour. Georgia/Caucasus

- Under constructions, more details coming. Primarily for 2018, but offered this year as well, short-notice - There have been several inquiries about ski tours to 4000-5000m in Georgia. A ski tour to Mkinvartsveri (Kazbek) is a challenging ski tour to one of the most beautiful summits in the Caucasus. This is a short-note, last-opportunity opportunity to ski this beautiful peak with me. I have summited Mkinvartsveri 4 times and made several first ski descents of routes on that mountain. Mkinvartsveri is also the 7th highest mountain in Caucasus. This tour is primarily target at people who have skied with me in the past, but is open to all interested. The dates are not fixed - there is some flexibility in early June. Details: Day 1. Transfer from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi). Day 2: Ascent to Bethlemi Hut (3670m) via Gergeti glacier. Day 3: Acclimatization ski tour to Ortsveri (4300 m) or other objectives of similar elevation. Day 4: Summit day and ski descent to Bethlemi Hut. Day 5: Return to Stepantsminda and Tbilisi. Day 6: Reserve day or extra day for acclimatisation. Very good ski touring experience, solid, confident skiing to 35-40° are essential to join this tour, as is a fitness level suited to carry a multi-day pack over long distances. Contact me for details regarding prerequisities, pricing options, travel/transport and dates options, as well as opions for this tour for 2018. Guiding season in Norway is still on and keeps me busy, but by June this product will stand. I also offer this tour without skis later in summer. For strong ski alpinists this tour is also possible as: - demanding traverse via the remote N-NE face (Devdorak-side) - a ski route Trevor Hunt and I opened in 2013, ski descent via the south flank (35-40°); - demanding traverse via the east ramp (35-50°) and descent via the south flank (35-40°), a ski route I skied with Andreas Riesner in 2008.
