Broomberg & Chanarin explore the history of a Kodak film released in the 1980s that was unable to differentiate the tones of darker skin. Filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard famously refused to use the film when on assignment in Zimbabwe, claiming it was inherently racist. Only after confectionary and furniture industries started complaining that the film could not capture their products, Kodak addressed the issue. Here ‘dodgers’ block the faces of the portrait sitters as the darkroom technique of ‘dodging’, used to lighten areas of an image, is made visible to render the subjects of the photographs at a remove. ‘Untitled (165 portraits with dodgers) is now on view in our exhibition ‘In the Belly of the Whale’. bit.ly/2dM6PSx --- Broomberg & Chanarin verkennen de geschiedenis van een in de jaren tachtig verschenen type Kodakfilm. ‘Untitled (165 portraits with dodgers) is nu te zien in onze tentoonstelling ‘In the Belly of the Whale’. bit.ly/2dDREKs

‘Every contact leaves a trace: follow the…’ Conference

One of the participants in our conference ‘Every contact leaves a trace: follow the…’ this Saturday is London-based artist and filmmaker Patrick Goddard (1984). A series of totemic short-films will intersperse the conference, borrowing and elaborating on the idea of productive interruptions. The conference takes our current exhibition ‘In the Belly of the Whale’ as a point of departure to examine how changing frames of reference affect artwork and artifacts and how these images and objects expose those very frames and discourses.

Sexuality, the city, and ecologies: Kasper Bosmans floor to ceiling murals translate from Witte de With’s archive. Bosmans’ personal filter turns heavy-handed topics into decorative patterns, inspired by the iconography of myths and legends. Instead of imposing meaning, he frees these topics from framing. Read more about the exhibition ‘Decorations’ on our website: bit.ly/2dRqCTY.

On view at Witte de With for 3 more weeks: 'GesammttkkunnsttMeshuggahhLaandtttt,' by Charlemagne Palestine at Witte de With. A solo exhibition with artist Charlemagne Palestine, who also spent several years living and working in Rotterdam, includes early video works, sculptures, paintings, installations, and sound scores. Charlemagne Palestine works form a highly personal universe of rituals, intoxication, and shamanism. In the last four decades, the artist has created an extensive body of experimental musical compositions, bodily performances, and, in later years, visual art works that are inhabited by stuffed animals. To Palestine, teddy bears figure as powerful shamanic totems, which he fondly calls #Divinities. Central to his exhibition are a grand piano, as the sounding heart of the show, and a new large-scale version of the so-called God-Bear Museum Model, a proposal for a new kind of museum where music and performance find a home just as easily as a painting would.
