If there’s a bird’s nest up there or the flue isn’t sufficiently clear, you not only risk a chimney fire, but smoke will enter your room potentially causing damage. Make sure you get your boiler serviced by a registered engineer too so that you can identify any problems before you need to turn the heating on. Burst pipes are often a major cause of damage during winter months, so you should look at ways you can prevent them from freezing. You can reduce the risk of frozen and burst pipes by ensuring that water pipes and water tanks in the loft are insulated with good quality lagging. DIY stores can provide some useful advice. “If going away keep your heating on for a regular interval each day at a temperature of between 12-15degrees centigrade. Know where your stopcock is too and make sure that it works. Your stopcock turns your cold water supply on and off. It is usually found under the kitchen sink. If you cannot locate it, ask a neighbour or seek advice from a plumber.” Finally, check your home insurance policy, so you’re clear on exactly what you are and aren’t covered for. Most policies will protect you against storm damage, but you do have a duty of care to maintain your property, as damage which is down to wear and tear won’t be covered. Always keep your policy details to hand too so that you can get in touch with your insurer straight away in the event you need to make a claim.
