Welcome to Roscommon Rural Transport page which is a joint project of Roscommon Rural Transport Company and Roscommon Rural Transport Forum to provide information on rural transport services in Co Roscommon Roscommon Rural Transport (RRT) is charged with delivery of the Rural Transport Programme in Co. Roscommon. RRT has been delivering RTP in Roscommon for 11 years, since the programme started.

RRT operate the Free Travel Pass Scheme which is vital for our older passengers.

RRT made approx 50,000 passenger journeys in 2011.

RRT operate 33 services on 20 routes throughout the county, services are demand responsive, door to door, delivered by local sub-contracted transport providers.

All RRT drivers and providers are local and trained to a very high level.

RRT is funded by the Dept of Transport, Tourism and Sport and the Dept. of Social Protection through Pobal.

RRT has a number of integrated services we expect an increase of integration of services during 2012

The company board is community based and a number of community organisations are represented on the board; GAA, IFA, ICA, Feroige also Roscommon Development Co. and Roscommon Rural Transport Forum are reps on board.

Roscommon Rural Transport Company is the county’s principal operator of rural transport services under the Rural Transport Programme, and it is working with the other member organisations which make up Roscommon Rural Transport Forum to bring about:


1. Improved rural bus services and development of new routes

2. Better provision of local transport and travel information

3. Better facilities for users of public & private transport such as bus shelters, taxi ranks and integrated ticketing

4. Greater sharing and utilisation of existing local transport resources

5. Integration of public, private and community transport services

6. The drafting and implementation of travel plans by local organisations  

7. Adoption of more sustainable means of travel such as car sharing, cycling and walking

8. Reduction in commuting through greater home-based working

The latest project for RRT is a joint venture between Roscommon LEADER Partnership & RRT  to pilot a Social Car Scheme in the Parish of Kilronan.

The pilot project will run for 6 months (20th February to 17th August 2012).

The target clients are non emergency HSE patients travelling to HSE facilities or to the nearest public transport (for HSE services outside the county).
