It's sad when the first post of the new school year that I am posting up is informing you of the fact that our ride-on lawnmower has been stolen from our school. The thieves broke into our school shed over the weekend and took the lawnmower. Another ride-on lawnmower was taken in the locality on Friday and it is believed that these two incidents are possibly connected. The aim of this post is firstly to appeal to anybody who may have seen any suspicious activity around the school over the weekend, to contact the school or the Garda Station in Birr. We also wish to raise awareness of the fact that there are thieves in our locality, so please remain vigilant.

In class we have been learning all about soil and how important soil is. We also discussed how important insects are for breaking up the soil. This gave us a great opportunity to go on a minibeast hunt. The pupils were very excited and got stuck in leaving no stone unturned. Back in class we talked about the different insects and the pupils loved taking a closer look at them under the microscope. Click on our website www.broughallns.ie to see more photos.

We were greeted with the sound of six more hatchlings chirping in our incubator this morning. Four ducklings and two chicks hatched last night. We got to see the ducklings use their webbed feet in the water. The pupils also loved to see the ducklings follow them down the hall. It was great to see all the pupils showing such an interest in nature.

It has been a very exciting week in school. At break time two pupils found a nest full of chicks in our playground. It is great to view them from a safe distance making sure not to disturb them. We also had some of our chicks hatch out which we had in the incubator. The pupils were so excited to see the chicks and they were full of questions and curiosity. It is a great experience for all. Thanks to everyone who took part in the making of the St. Patrick's Day Float. It looked great on the day and it sent out a clear and important message to all. The pupils were very proud to see all their art work assembled together on the float. The pupils had a great day and they always love taking part in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. The day got even better when it was announced that St. Kieran's NS won the Cafe Royale Trophy. Well done to all.

Many of you who have been travelling past our school over the last number of weeks may have seen the fantastic signs our pupils made to encourage motorists to slow down. Unfortunately over the long weekend one of our signs was taken. We would appreciate if anyone in the community knows where it is or who may have it if they could return it to the school as huge effort was put into making these signs. Thank you .

Thanks to all who helped out in preparing our float for the St. Patrick's Day Parade. The boys and girls staged a scene from 1916 which took place at the GPO. The judging panel clearly responded positively to the efforts of our super pupils as we were awarded the overall prize in the schools section. Maith sibhse, buachaillí agus cáilíní. The 15th of March was a special day for all schools across the country as Proclamation Day was marked. In St. Kieran's N.S. we commemorated the events of 1916. The children engaged in singing, dance and recitation activities, all of which had a 1916 theme. The proclamation was also read aloud. The children of St. Kieran's NS displayed great national pride as they raised their National Flag and they engaged in all activities in a very patriotic manner. Well done boys and girls and many thanks to the wider community who made the day such a special occasion for all involved. Check out our website www.broughallns.ie to view photos.
