It’s all happening with our Cleaning Doctor, David Gamble and his team Cleaning Doctor Carpet & Upholstery Services - Newry, Banbridge, South Down, who are certainly raising awareness of the plight of homelessness in Ireland. Last week, David was involved in a "Sleep Out" and he gave the following commentary on his experience. He said “Twenty four men and women, mainly from Grace Generation Church in Banbridge slept overnight in Banbridge town centre. We slept in groups between three and six per group. Numerous people drove past, some beeping the horns and sometimes a smart comment shouted from the passengers window. Some walked past, took a quick look and walked on, maybe afraid to engage. For a few, the curiosity was too much, two girls passed by returning from a night out. I had more under clothes on than both of them were wearing put together. "Why are yous lying there?" they asked, when they heard the facts, their smiles faded. They praised us for sleeping out and off they went home. We nodded off after that, it certainly wasn't a restful sleep but we made it to the end and remained dry. On reflection, what if I had been there on my own? Not everyone is sympathetic to the plight of the homeless. I would have been so vulnerable, what if someone had a go at me and where would any help come from, if at all. Easy pickings! How could I get away and take all my belongings? If it had been last week with the temperature dropping to minus 7 or wet? How could I dry my sleeping bag the next day? In fact, how could I put my day in if it was raining or snowing? What could I get to eat? These are only some of the problems and questions facing a rough sleeper on our streets daily.
