Checks are always a safe bet in menswear, but when it comes to styling them, it helps to know your houndstooths from your tartans. Luckily, this season, you only really need to worry about two varieties - gingham and tattersall. These unfussy prints are everywhere for AW17, and although traditionally associated with tablecloths and slippers, they’re significantly cooler in their current incarnation! Gingham (white and coloured, even-sized checks) and tattersall (multi- coloured checks featuring thin, regularly-spaced horizontal and vertical stripes) look particularly smart paired with knitwear, making them perfect for the colder months. You’ll find plenty of both in the new collection from Irish menswear brand André, who are best known for their shirts, but have also attracted a fan base at home and abroad with their knits, chinos, and denim. Their latest campaign, which was shot in Dublin’s Hellfire Club, shows how you can smarten up your favourite piece of knitwear by letting a check shirt peek above the neckline and below the sleeve.
