Today is Dean Jonathan Swift's 349th birthday. A writer of many birthday poems himself, Swift was the recipient of at least one poem marking the occasion, attributed to his close friend Stella. It begins: St Patrick's Dean, your country's pride My early and my only guide, Let me among the rest attend Your pupil and your humble friend, To celebrate in female strains The day that paid your mother's pains; Descend to take the tribute due In gratitude alone to you. As the cold winter nights set in, we are getting ready for a host of exciting events taking place in the Cathedral throughout December. We start with the annual Peter McVerry Trust Christmas Concert before continuing with performances from the Guinness Choir and Glória. The iconic Irish legend, the Children of Lir, will be brought to life by renowned Irish composer Patrick Cassidy; while our own choir will perform a special concert of The Snowman. The fun continues after Christmas with two concerts being held for New Year’s. Check out www.stpatrickscathedral.ie/calendar for full details.
