We scanned a batch of maiden heifers which had previously been Ai’d with sex semen and subsequently turned out to grass at the end of March. The heifers were scanned on 30th May. The SmartScan Experience showed that the heifers were reproductively sound but no animal was scanned pregnant. With the SmartScan Experience we can identify the presence of a pregnancy from Day 21 of gestation onwards. We identified that some of the heifers were mid-cycle, some had been in heat the previous 6 days and 3 heifers were coming in heat over next 2 days. The farmer was totally distraught but we explained to him that the information provided from the SmartScan Experience, that all of these heifers could be bred to Ai in the next 10 Days. It was going to take time to get another bull to introduce to the heifers. We advised the client that with the no. of heifers remaining to be put in calf , he would be best advised to get he heifers bred over the next 10 days and then uses the Smart Scan Experience in 4 weeks to identify those heifers not pregnant. But still have an opportunity to have all of the heifers in calf by the 2nd week of April 2020. This case study shows that even though stock bull may be fertility tested prior to sale , it doesn’t not give an guarantee that he still be libido to complete the test of mating the heifers on heat. In my considered opinion , the use of electroejaculation does not provide a semen sample consistent with the named ejaculation presented when the bull mates on heifer.
