St. John's Photographic Studies course is designed to provide students with an introductory grounding in all aspects of photography The FETAC Level 5 programme for the Photographic Studies course is designed to provide students with an introductory grounding in all aspects of photographic practice. Students progress through a series of workshops and lectures aimed at increasing their awareness of image making from concept to final production.

Entry Requirements
Leaving Certificate (5 passes) or equivalent
Applicants of mature years will be considered on their merits.

Course Outline:
Digital Studio Photography
The use of digital media in studio photography
Documentary
Investigating all aspects of Photo-journalistic, Documentary photography.
Darkroom Practice
Printing in black & white and colour with an emphasis on the role of print quality in visual expression.
History of Photography
Developing an appreciation of the potency of the medium as a communicative tool.
Computer Image Processing
Using computers in contemporary photography.
Communications
Work Experience




The Second Year FETAC Level 6 programme is designed to provide an advanced understanding of the photographic medium. Students progress through a series of workshops and lectures aimed at increasing their perceptive awareness which culminates in the individuals ability to apply advanced techniques to concept thereby producing visually successful and articulate work. This educational process also prepares future photographers to eloquently express their work practice when necessary. Upon completion of the Level 6 programme students gain considerable experience by organising a professional Graduate Exhibition at a recognised city centre venue.

Exceptional candidates may be considered for direct entry to the Second Year Level 6 programme
Applicants of mature years will be considered on their merits

Documentary Photography
Creative Darkroom
The Art of Colour Photography
Communications
(Four of the modules taken at Level 5 will make up the equivalent of two Level 6 modules to complete the requirements to achieve a full award at this Level.)

Facilities

Two darkrooms fully equipped for B/W and colour printing. College Studio with professional lighting systems. Medium & large format cameras are provided by the college. Students need to provide their own 35mm SLR’s.The department also runs a shop which sells materials to students at cost price.

Progression

Graduates of the course successfully achieve entry to First and Second Year Degree programmes at Universities throughout Ireland and the UK. A number of students have won significant awards in competition, while yet others have successfully published work in magazines or have secured book publication.
