Friday night saw the second semi final between former champion Gareth Strain and Stephen McHugh. It was Gareth who ran into a 2-0 lead but Stephen came back to win the next 3 frames and lead 3-2, but Gareth wasn’t done yet and took the next to make it 3-3 and into the deciding frame. It was nip and tuck the whole way through but Gareth had an easy blue to win the frame and match but missed, so that meant that Stephen needed blue, pink and black. Just as Stephen was about to pot the blue someone’s phone rang, security was called and he was evicted from the building. With the tension at boiling point, Stephen potted the blue, pink and black winning the frame and booking his spot in this years final. Speaking to Sky Sports News after the match Stephen said “It was a tough match but I’m glad to make it through to my first final, the crowd was a bit roudey for a while but there was one guy in particular that spent more time in the bar than watching the match”

Wednesday night saw the first of our semi finals between Liam Lyons and John McLaughlin, and it was John who played some fantastic snooker who went through to this year’s final who won 4-2. Speaking to the Inishowen Independent after the game John said “I played 70% better than what I played on Monday night and I am so happy to have finally made the final after 10 years of trying.” Asked who he would like to meet in the final he replied “It doesn’t really matter I’ll be bringing them down to my size regardless”

Monday night saw the second quarter final between John McLaughlin and Eddie McKinney. This game has to go down as one of the worst quarter finals we’ve seen in a long time, that finally saw John McLaughlin take it by 3-2 after almost 4 hours of play. The only highlight of the game was the nice buns that John brought with him, big thanks to Louise for that! As John went up to the press box after the game for his post match interview all the interviewers had left and even the cleaning lady was gone. Therefore a big improvement will be needed if he intends to lift the cup this year.
