April 12, 1912 – Titanic Theory & Fact Introduction 1. When Jesus was on earth, He taught by using parables. A parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. 2. Today we will take a true event which occurred on April 14, 1912, in order to look at some spiritual truths. I. A True Story A. The world situation in the year 1912 was one of great optimism. 1. Every day it seemed that something was getting bigger and better. 2. It was “the Gilded Age.” 3. The Industrial Revolution and science had greatly improved the world. 4. Technology was almost “god” to some. B. Among the recent accomplishments: 1. Radio was in use. 2. Man was flying. Orville and Wilbur Wright got off the ground in 1903. By 1909 the English Channel had been crossed by plane in 37 minutes. 3. In 1908 Ford began to produce the Model T. 4. Robert Peary reached the North Pole in 1909. 5. Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole in 1911. C. And the Titanic was built. She was 8821/2 feet long (1/6 of a mile!)175 feet high, 92 feet wide and weighed 46,328 tons! 1. On board were tennis courts, a swimming pool, gymnasiums, ball-rooms, elevators - no expense was spared. 2. She was constructed with 16 water-tight compartments, and could float with 4 of these flooded simultaneously. These compartments could be sealed off by electric switch from the bridge or automatically by electric water sensor. D. What some said: 1. Vice President of White Star Lines Phillip Franklin - “There is no danger that the Titanic will sink. The boat is un-sinkable and nothing but inconvenience will be suffered by the passengers.” 2. Ship Builder Magazine called her “practically unsinkable”. 3. The ship’s captain, E.J. Smith - “I can’t imagine any situation that would cause the ship to founder.” Again, “Even if the engines and boilers were to fall through their bottoms, the vessel would remain afloat.” 4. Thomas Andrews, chief designer of the ship building company, Harland and Wolf, said, “Even if he ship were cut in three parts it would remain afloat.” 5. A Titanic carpenter, F.J. Parkinson said, “That ship will always stay up in the water.” 6. Some wrote in their diaries that they heard some say, “Even God Almighty could not sink this ship.” 7. In a brochure published in 1910 by White Star on the Olympic and the Titanic, these words appeared: “These two wonderful vessels are designed to be unsinkable.” E. The maiden voyage left Southampton, England April 10, 1912 for New York with 2,207 on board. Some were incredibly wealthy such as Isidor Straus, owner of Macy’s department store and his wife, Rosalie. Also, John Jacob Astor, heir of a fur empire, and a real estate fortune. He and his cousin, William Waldorf Astor built and owned the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. F. At 11:40 p.m. on April 14, 1912 - a cold Sunday night in the North Atlantic 1. The Titanic struck an iceberg, cutting a 300 foot gash in her side - and eventually filling 6 compartments. 2. At 2:20 a.m., April 15, 1912, the Titanic went down 400 miles south of Newfoundland. Out of 2,207 people on board, only 705 were to survive. That night 1,502 souls went to meet their maker. The survivors were picked up by the Carpathia 1 hour and 20 minutes after the Titanic went down. II. Lesson #1: Trust in God A. When the people boarded the Titanic 1. Many trusted in the Titanic 2. Some in Captain Smith - The most highly paid Captain in the White Star Line who had 40 years of “uneventful service.” 3. Some may have trusted in money or technology. B. But all should have trusted in God. 1. Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart.” 2. It is said that one man opened his wallet and emptied it into the sea. When he realized his money was powerless to help him. 1 Timothy 6:17, “Trust (not) in uncertain riches, but in the living God.” 3. Jeremiah 17:5, “Cursed be the man that trusteth in man.” Jeremiah 17:7, “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord.” 4. 2 Corinthians 1:9, “We should not trust in ourselves, But in God which raiseth the dead.” 5. Yet the Wall Street Journal, April 16, 1912 said man’s thinking “is incomparably the greatest force in the universe.” “…Slowly but surely human thought is neutralizing the largely incalculable forces of nature.” II. Lesson #2: Fact Defeats Theory every time. A. Theory v. Fact 1. Theory: There were no icebergs in the area. 2. Fact: There were icebergs and the Titanic had been warned. 3. Theory: Lookouts could give ample warning. 4. Fact: The lookouts provided 37 seconds warning. An insufficient amount of time for the collision to be avoided. 5. Theory: The Titanic was unsinkable. 6. Fact: It would sink. 7. Theory: Even after the collision, one officer was sent to inspect the damage. He came back saying, “Everything’s fine.” 8. Fact: The Titanic was mortally wounded. It was not fine. P.A.S. Franklin, Vice President of International Mercantile Marine told newspaper reporters, “Even if she was in a collision with an iceberg, she is in no danger. With her numerous water-tight compartments she is absolutely unsinkable. It makes no difference what she hits.” Everything was not fine. 9. Theory: The Titanic did not sink. The Wall Street Journal on April 16, 1912 - “The gravity of the damage is apparent. But the important point is that she did not sink.” 10. Fact: But she did! 11. Theory: All were saved. The New York Sun on April 15, 1912, the headline read: “All saved from Titanic After Collision”. The sub-headline read, “Liner is being towed to Halifax after smashing into an iceberg.” 12. Fact: Not all were saved. 1502 people died. B. Application 1. Theory: Jesus is not the only way. 2. Fact: John 14:6 3. Theory: One’s interpretation does not matter. People can believe what they want and still go to heaven. 4. Fact: It’s possible to “twist” and “pervert” the meaning of scripture to one’s own destruction (2 Peter3:15-16). 5. Theory: The church is not important. 6. Fact: Acts 20:28; Ephesians 5:23; cf. 4:4 cf. 1:22-23 7. Theory: Baptism is not necessary for salvation. 8. Fact: Mark 16:16; 1 Peter 3:21 9. Theory: There’s a second chance after death 10. Fact: There are no second chances - Hebrews 9:27; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Luke 16:26 11. Theory: Half-hearted religion will be acceptable. 12. Fact: Luke 14:26-27; Revelation 3:16; Mark 12:30 13. Theory: I’m a pretty good person. 14. Fact: Romans 3:10, 23; Hebrews 5:9 C. I used this “Theory/Fact” format because shortly after the sinking, a newspaper cartoon appeared depicting the Titanic. On the iceberg was written “fact”. On the Titanic was written “theory”. 1. The theory of the unsinkable ship was proved wrong. 2. The theory of man’s way of salvation is something that too will be proved wrong! IV. Lesson #3 The folly of unheeded warnings A. The Titanic had been warned seven times on Sunday, April 14th. 1. The first five times were passed to the captain. He showed no great concern. 2. The 6th came at 9:40 p.m. (2 hours before impact). Jack Phillips, the radio operator wrote down the message and put it under a paper weight. The operator was busy sending messages for passengers to family and friends. There is some conflicting reports on whether this message was ever relayed to the captain or not, cf. Luke 8:14. 3. The 7th message of warning came at 11:05 p.m. (35 minutes from impact). The Californian, about 20 miles away sent word by radio operator Evans. “Say o’man, we are stopped and surrounded by icebergs.” The Titanic’s radio operator Phillips replied, “Shut up, shut up. I am busy.” This message of warning never reached the captain. B. Religiously 1. The Bible says that the wise man is one that heareth and doeth (Matthew 7:24-ff). 2. Numerous are those who have heard and continue to put off the proper response. “How shall we escape of we neglect so great a salvation?” (Hebrews 2:3). V. Lesson #4: The folly of being unprepared. A. The Titanic had 2,207 people on board. It was capable of carrying over 3,500. 1. Yet, it had a life-boat capacity of only 1,178. 2. 48 life boats were initially recommended (which would have easily accommodated all). Such was rejected. 3. A decision came forth calling for 32. But White Star management felt such would look cluttered, and would be unnecessary because the ship was thought unsinkable. The number was reduced to 20. J. Bruce Ismay, Chairman of White Star Lines, “The number was based no doubt on the assumption that the great ocean liners were unsinkable. But experience has taught us there is no such thing as an unsinkable ship. I admit that I was among those who were deluded on this point.” B. Millions are going even now unprepared to meet their God. Luke 12:16-21. VI. Lesson #5: The folly of procrastination A. Of the 2,207 people on board, there was room in the life boats to save 1,178. But only 705 were saved. B. Why? 1. The first few boats were sent away holding 12-14 people, though they could hold 58. 2. Many simply refused to get into the lifeboats. The Titanic would not sink. Why go out into the cold, the water was 28 degrees, for a few minutes? A few hours? When all would be OK. Some thought it a publicity stunt to show that the Titanic was safety conscious. 3. It was only upon hearing a series of explosions, and as the water began to fill the boat and the boat began to shift, that panic set in. C. Procrastination is a killer. A fable is told that Satan called his angels and asked, “How can we destroy the souls of man?” 1. One said, “I will tell them there is no God” Satan said that man would not accept it, creation testifies of a creator. 2. Another said, “I will tell them there is not a heaven or hell.” Satan said that that wouldn’t work. Many believe in Jesus and He clearly spoke of such. 3. Finally, one said, “I will tell them that they need not be in a hurry to serve God.” Satan said, “That will do it.” Luke 12:16-21; cf. Matthew 25:1-13; parable of the 10 virgins. VII. Lesson #6: Others A. Officer Herbert Pittman was asked what he heard as the ship went down. He said “It was one long continuous moan.” B. Eva Hart, a Titanic survivor recalled hearing screams. “Dreadful! It was absolutely dreadful!” she said. C. There is coming a day of “weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matt. 25:30). 1. There’s ample room in the lifeboats. 2. But are we helping others get on board?

SPEAKING IN TONGUES By Bro. Michael Renaghan, Ballyroan Church of Christ, Ireland Introduction: In an 8 Pages Colouring Book used by Charismatics to teach kindergarten children to speak in tongues there was a cartoon with the following “BAH-LE ODOMA TA LAH-SE-TA NO-MO” (John F. Mac Arthur Charismatic chaos p.220 Zondevan 1992) This expresses the typical charismatic and Pentecostal Mode of speaking in Tongues. However, as you can see and hear this is not a language. William Samarin, professor of Linguistics at the University of Toronto wrote after studying the phenomenon for more than five years in many different countries: “Glossolalia is fundamentally not language”. (Tongues of Men and Angels, p.227 MacMillan 1972). John Kindahl, a clinical psychologist and Paul Qualben, a psychiatrist were commissioned by the American Lutheran Church and the National Institute of Mental Health to do a long range study on tongues. Their conclusion: it is nothing more than a “learned behavior”. The Journal of Abnormal psychology published a study conducted at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada demonstrating that tongues is learned behavior. The title of the article: “Glossolalia as Learned Behavior: An Experimental Demonstration” (95:1 (1987) 21-23) The word Tongues (in connection with the miraculous gift) is used 25 times in the NT: Once in MK 16:17, 4 times in the Book of Acts (2:4, 11; 10:46; 19:6) and twenty time by Paul in 1 Cor. 12-14 I. BIBLICAL TONGUES: A. Miraculous Tongues were foreign languages spoken in Praise or Thanksgiving to God. a. Tongue; language, utterance “the language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of other nations” Thayer. “The supernatural gift of speaking in another language without its having been learnt” Vine. b. The speaker exalted God Acts 2:11; we hear then in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God. Acts 10:46; for one who speak in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries. a. Tongues were not a way to preach the gospel in another language. There is no evidence of the gospel being preached using the gift of tongues. B. Tongues were given for the sake of unbelievers 1 Cor: 14:21-22 in the Law it is written, “BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THE PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME.” Says the Lord 22So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is of a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. a. Particularly to unbelieving Jews Acts 2:4-16 b. The gift was given to persuade them that the apostles spoke for God c. It was given to show unbelievers that God was speaking. 1 Cor 14:21-22 a. God told them beforehand about his plans Is 28:11-12 b. Some would still refuse to listen to God Tongues were associated with New Revelation 1. One of the manifestations of the Holy Spirit given to confirm the spoken word Heb 2:3-4, how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, 4God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will. 2. Once that revelation was completed, the need for tongues, would cease 1 Cor 13:8; Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease, if there is knowledge, it will be done away. a. A. There has been 1800 years of silence on the question of tongues. b. Tongues are part of new movement. Just like Mormonism is a new movement, Jehovah’s Witnesses are a new movement. II. Modern Tongues A. History of tongues speaking after the new testament A. After the Close of the New Testament there has been a series of groups that claimed to speak in Tongues. B. 1. 150 – 300: Montanists. Montanus from the region of Phrygia believed he ws a prophet of God sent to reform the Church. Their message was spread mostly by two women prophetesses, Priscilla and Maximilla. C. 2. 1650-1700: The Cevennol Prophets from Cevennes, Southern Fance, A rabidly anti-Catholic sect who used armed force. D. A. At the same time Jansenists, French Catholic loyalists claimed to speak in tongues were condemned and persecuted by the papacy. E. 1730-1820: Shakers in north America. The founder, Mother Ann Lee regarded herself as the female equivalent of Jesus, and claimed to speak in 72 languages. They spoke in tongues during their worship. F. 1810-1850: Edward Irving and his followers in Scotland claimed tongues and prophecy. Their prophecies contradicted one another, and they taught many false doctrines, even creating 12 modern apostles. B. HISTORY OF MODERN PENTECOSTAL MOVEMENT 1. Began in Bethel College, Topeka, Kansas, USA by Charles fox Parham on January 1, 1901. a. Pharham had four years been impressed with the possibility that glossolalia (Speaking in tongues) might be restored in the form of foreign language facility granted to missionaries who would no longer have to take time for normal language studies.” (Vinson Synan, quoted in John F. MacArthur, Charismatic Chaos, p33 Zondervan 1992) b. His students were given the task of studying the baptism of Holy Spirit. Their conclusion was that every occasion was accompanied by speaking in other tongues. c. Agnes Ozman, 30, a student at the college was the first speak in tongues, followed by others on that day. d. It was confirmed to denominations such as Assemblies of God, Foursquare Gospel Churches, and the United Pentecostal Church. 2. Charismatic Movement was begun in Van Nuys, California, USA by Dennis Bennett, rector of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in 1959. a. Charismatic Movement in multi – denominational, encompassing every Protestant group and Catholics. C. THE LANGUAGE OF ANGELS? 1. The movement claims today that believers speak in the language of angels 1 Cor 13:1 a. Every time angels appear they speak normal human language (Gen 18; Lk 1: 11-37 b. Their languages is understood by the human hearers Isa 6:2-3 c. Even if they have their own special language, men cannot speak it! 2 Cor 12:4; was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak 2. Pentecostal point out that 1 Cor 14 speaks of “an unknown language” a. unknown does not mean meaningless b. Example of speaking in Irish, then translating that into Italiian: Ta athas orm go mbeidh me anseo inuibh. Io sono content stare qui. I am happy to be here today. c. When translated every language, even unknown, becomes meaningful. This is not the case with ecstatic utterances. 3. No one is a Pentecostal Church ever starts speaking in tongues of their own volition. It is a learnt experience (see introduction regarding kindergarten teaching material) Conclusion: People might think “why be so negative about tongues movement? Or “There is no harm in what they are doing.” “If it is so wrong, why is it so popular?” “Why be so negative about the tongues movement?’ is being pro-truth negative? Is seeking after righteousness that is found in the pages of the New Testament negative? See Jn 8: 31- 312 “There is no harm in what they are doing. When Israel left God, this was their catch cry. Is teaching error harmless. Is it harmless to mislead others? Is it harmful to say this is a Biblical movement when the Bible and HISTORY say that it stopped in the first century? Prov 30:6 Do not add to His words or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar. “If it is so wrong, why is it so popular?” Popularity is never to be mistaken for approval from God. The pages of the Bible are full of “popular” heresies, and broad is the way that leads to destruction” Mt. 7:13-23 The Bible record shows that the gift of tongues was the ability to speak in FOREIG LANGUAGES without prior learning. Today’s gibberish is not the same. Today’s so – called tongues is learned experience, not a gift. Today’s so – Called tongues is a used as a sign for believers, contrary to its purpose in the Bible. Today’s so – called tongues is not a language of any sort, but a gibber. The gift of Tongues in the bible was part of a series of gifts given by the Holy Spirit in order to confirm the Revealed word of God. That Revelation is now complete and the purpose of the gifts is therefore complete. We do not need to miraculous gift today, we have the Divine word.
