A stiff neck is typically characterized by soreness and difficulty moving the neck, especially when trying to turn the head to the side. It may also be accompanied by a headache, neck pain, shoulder pain and/or arm pain. In order to look sideways or over the shoulder, an individual may need to turn the entire body instead of the stiff neck. To alleviate the pain, you could try gently stretching your neck to increase movement; icing the affected area to reduce inflammation or resting it until symptoms improve. Typically the pain will go away by itself within a few days, but a neck and shoulder massage will provide immediate relief. A very common injury. It's always best to get it seen to early, otherwise it will become chronic and take longer to heal. If you feel any symptoms coming on, wear a support and rest it as much as possible. Then go and and get it looked at by a therapist like me as soon as possible.
