Did you know -Facts of the Great White. Carcharodon Carcharias GW averages 4.4 meter in length. Some have been recorded at 6 meters and stands a weight of apprx. 2.3 tonnes. Few sea creatures strike more fear in humans that GW but shark attacks are rare. They have strong, torpedo-shaped bodies and powerful tails that help them swim. Great whites can reach speeds up to 25 km/h. In the Cape Province -South Africa the GW has developed a special hunting technique where they from great depth spot a target at the surface and races up with a burst of speed to bump their prey while simultaneously biting it. The speed is sometime so high that they leap clear out of the waters. The great white is at the top of the food chain and has few threats in the ocean. Only orcas and larger sharks can pose a risk. The only other risk to the great white shark is human interaction. Their jaws and fins are sold for considerable amounts of money and they are now listed as vulnerable by IUCN Red List but are on the brink of being labeled as ebdangered spices due to overfishing. You can find the GW in temperate waters all over the world, although they have been known to make brief trips into colder water in the north. Please see map below. Frontiers Ltd.
