The Shanghai Healing Home’s mission is to assist the local Chinese Children’s Welfare Institute by providing pre- and post-surgical care to abandoned babies suffering from surgically correctable deformities. Babies born with cleft lip and palate have a difficult time taking a bottle. They cannot create suction because of the hole in their mouths. It takes two to three hours to finish one bottle, so they use more calories than they take in. The one on one time required to feed these babies provides a large challenge. Being born with a cleft lip and palate is more than a cosmetic birth defect; for many children it can be life threatening. Our home is one solution where orphaned children can be cared for before and after surgery. These children will be cared for by trained care givers in an environment that more resembles a home than a hospital. Both pre- and post-surgical care may take anywhere from 6 months to 18 months. After full recovery , children will be returned to the their home, healthy and ready for adoption into their forever familys.
