Our pacific Wolfeels (which is a misleading name as they are not actually true eels but fish) may look fearsome with their rugged, grizzled faces and their massive mouths filled with rows of sharp teeth, but ask any diver about their encounters and you will get tales of curious and friendly creatures. These rugged fellows pair up and settle down in cozy dens where both parents have a hand in hatching their broods. Our dear friend and very talented photographer Richard Salas captured this stunning photo of one of our local Wolfeels (named Mongo by one of our divemasters TI AR É) chowing down on a delicious, crabby, crunchy treat.

Many people don’t realize the incredible colours that lay just below our pacific waters. Our guest James McDonald snapped this amazing photo in 3 feet of water using only ambient light, no strobes, no focus light. The incredible red of the Giant Pacific Octopus contrasts beautifully with our emerald waters and golden kelp. Thanks for sharing your capture, James!

This series of photos were taken by our lovely guest, James McDonald. We were just finishing our dive and picking up the last of our guests in the water on a beautiful sunny day at Hussar point when Bill spotted large Octopus, sitting clear as day on a rock. It looked at us reproachfully as the guests scrambled to get their cameras. Only the last diver was still zipped in his drysuit, James, so we dropped him off back in the water and he took an amazing series of photos using only the ambient light in 3 feet of water. Thanks James for sharing your pictures with us!

We are lucky to share our coastal waters with more then 35 different species of Rockfish. These dashing fellows come in all shapes and sizes and colours. This individual is a China Rockfish (Sebastes nebulosus) and he (or she) belongs to the benthic rockfish species which are territorial and live in rocky areas where their prey is abundant (mostly small fish and invertebrates such as crabs). This photo really highlights the beautiful patterns and colours present on their bodies and fins.

To those who have never ventured with us under the surface of our oceans, the marine world can seem a scary place filled with unimaginable creatures. But once you experience this amazing world of incredible adaptations and marine organism interconnections, you can never look at our oceans the same. What we do on land directly impacts our marine environments and the animals which call them home. This fragile looking basket star is a flexible filter feeder which extends its beautiful lacy arms into the water column for food drifting in the currents. Look for them atop rocky outcrops or perched on Gorgonian corals to get the upper hand in collecting dinner. #gradmaslacydoily #godspocketresort

Our season is officially back in full swing! We are excited to share a new season with all of our wonderful guests in 2017 and post their incredible photographs for you to enjoy! The Giant Pacific Octopus reins supreme in our waters as one of the most fascinating organisms. Each one has a distinct personality (or at least what we would call personality, who knows what they call it). Some are shy, some are curious, some are cranky and some are sweet (or at least that is what they appear to us humans). Not only are they characters themselves, but their individual arms can have different “personalities” as well. Each arm has bundles of nerves that can independently “think” (to a certain extent). Come dive with us and see for yourselves what these fabulous creatures are capable of! (picture by James McDonald)

A photogenic and delicate species of nudibranch, these fellows are often found in large aggregations clinging to kelp, rocks and anything that will get them higher in the water column to find delicious morsels floating by. To float through a field of Hooded Nudibranchs clinging to eel grass and kelp on a sunny day is one of life’s most pleasant experiences!
