Fact VS Fiction: Sitting too close to the TV or staring at a computer screen is bad for your eyes. "Neither of these will physically damage your eyes. But in many instances, you will see much better in better light, and reading at a proper distance from your work," said Dr. Ali. So, more outside light can certainly help you see better. At the same time, though, your retina is not damaged by the high amount of light that is let in by an expanded pupil in the dark. "This is particularly true for people with specific eye conditions, such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration," further explained Ali. "Also, presbyopia – the natural decrease in ability to read at close distances that happens to all of us with age – can lead to eye strain and headaches with prolonged reading at near distances," said Ali. Similarly, having to focus on a smaller area is likely to cause strain on the eyes, but not lasting damage. "Taking a break and focusing your eyes in the distance for a few minutes can relieve this strain," said Ali.
