CaseBank develops and deploys software solutions that enable its customers to dramatically improve first-time success on the diagnosis of complex equipment.  The diagnostic system developed by Casebank, called Spotlight was designed to facilitate the capturing and dissemination of knowledge about complex products and processes.   Spotlight  makes diagnosing problems in complex equipment quicker by eliminating needless diagnostic steps. The objective of the system is to allow novice technicians be able to troubleshoot problems with the accuracy and precision of highly experienced technicians.  

A significant benefit of SpotLight is its ability to capture, store and protect the intellectual property represented by technical problem solving, gathered during the troubleshooting process.

Spotlight blends several technologies, such as case-based reasoning, artificial intelligence, natural language processing and data mining capabilities into a comprehensive system that is intuitive to use, integrates gracefully into complementary systems and generates positive results.  SpotLight starts the diagnostic process with input on the initial observed symptom(s), to solve problems efficiently, and arrive at those solutions on their first attempt. SpotLight reasons on a specialized knowledgebase (KB), which combines the original designer's anticipation of fault modes, with real-world field experience obtained from users. SpotLight's KB grows over time, getting its cues, among other things, from unresolved SpotLight sessions, through rigorous monitoring and administrative processes.

Blog article: Regulated Industries, Separate Troubleshooting Procedures to Ensure Safety - If diagnostic guidance was required to follow the same regulatory approval cycle as service manuals, then critical field experience would arrive late to the field and technicians would find it nearly impossible to recognize and respond to new failure modes. Such an approach would be counter-productive to the safety goals of the regulations. When diagnostic guidance is managed by a DDB the maintenance manuals are still effective, despite their long revision cycles, but the DDB can quickly implement best practices from the field to identify emerging problems and new failure modes.
