Financial Coaching When I moved to Cochrane in early 2010, my financial coaching career took off. Working at a large international investment firm was a good place to start, but I soon realized my qualifications for insurance and accreditations for investments were just the beginning. I am an entrepreneur at heart and I have always been at my best when coaching and educating people. As my financial knowledge and qualifications expanded over the last few years, it was clear my passion to share financial knowledge lead me to the only possible place I could think of. I started my own financial coaching business a couple years ago – simply named, Barrie Financial Consulting. Through dozens of presentations I have given, people have enjoyed learning about saving, investing, estate planning and passing their wealth to their heirs and the causes they care about the most.

Where do teens go for answers to their money questions? Soon, they can watch and listen to a new show I'm creating especially for TEENAGERS!!! It all started in 2011 when I began volunteering with #JuniorAchievement sharing financial literacy programs in schools. The first time was terrifying. I barely slept the night before, and I was shaking the whole time, but I got through it. When I got in my car afterwards, it hit me: THIS IS WHAT I WAS MADE FOR. PROBLEM: I couldn't figure out how to make money at it. I had a job as a "financial advisor", which is a deceptive title for FINANCIAL PRODUCT SALESPERSON. I made money only when I sold investments and life insurance. How was I going to pay my bills and follow my passion? I couldn't figure it out. Even though the financial advisor job was BS in many ways, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. The training was top-notch and it was the perfect place to get my wobbly legs stronger so I could go out on my own. After three years at a large international investment firm, I created my own financial consulting business which I still run today. While building my business, a series of twists and turns led me to writing a book to help moms manage their money better. Even though I knew the book would get me closer to my ultimate goal of teaching kids about money, I still had no idea how I was going to position it. Turns out if you keep walking through doors as they open for you, it all works out!! I'm skipping over some really important details here, which you will hear in the first episodes of the #askLyndsie show, but I'm happy to announce that I've arrived at a place that allows me time and money to pursue my passion. It will mean some trade-offs, such as, I won't be buying my dream cabin in the woods as soon as I had hoped, but this feels right. I'm excited, and I'm feeling the excitement building from all of you, so I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for that. The Teen Beat Mixing contest was a success, and now I need to pick one, so I need the help of teenagers everywhere!! Listen and vote here: https://youtu.be/BGfEO2-ixbw (Link in bio too)

The Seamstress & the Stock Broker By Lyndsie Barrie A stockbroker named Wendy was grocery shopping. She passed a woman wearing a beautiful summer dress. Wendy had been looking everywhere for a dress just like it - simple and summery with lace detail. Perfect for the cottage. She turned her shopping cart around and caught up to the dress. “I must say, that is a lovely dress! Do you mind telling me where you bought it?” “Oh, thank you! I sewed it myself.” “Really?!? How long did it take you?” “About an hour. This is a really simple design. I’ve loved to sew since I was little girl.” Seeing the dress up close, Wendy was even more impressed with its expensive-looking quality. “With your talent, you could make dresses and sell them in local stores and online!” “Thank you! I actually do sell some of my creations. I sew for a few ladies. Mostly mending and alterations, but they do send me photos of dresses they want me to make from time to time. Mostly I make my own clothes and clothes for my family. I sew for an hour or two each day.” “Is sewing your only job?” Wendy couldn't believe that someone with such talent was only working at it so little. If she loved it, why not work more? Make more money? “Well, it depends on what you call a ‘job’. We live on a farm. We raise our own beef and chicken, grow our own vegetables and crops to feed the animals. We grow most of our own food, so we rarely have to buy groceries. My husband has a business fixing vehicles and machinery. What do you do for a living?” “I'm a stockbroker in the city. I invest in companies. I also have my MBA, which is why I’m curious about your sewing business. I'm Wendy, by the way. What's your name?” The ladies shook hands. “I'm Suzanne. And this is one of my two sons.” Suzanne gestured to the teenager coming up the aisle towards them carrying big bag of flour. Suzanne continued “It’s been lovely chatting with you Wendy. Thank you for the compliments on my dress. I'm not sure what kind of business idea you have regarding my sewing skills, but I’m quite content with the little bit of money I make from my sewing business. We love the farm life…” Suzanne looked at her son. “Taking care of a farm and growing your own food is a lot of work, but it doesn't feel like work, right Luke?” The boy laughed. “Sure Mom! Feeding cows at 6:00 every morning doesn't feel like work at all!” They all laughed at his expression of pretend-fatigue. “It ain't that bad. I'd much rather live in the country than in the city. You know, my mom gets compliments on her dresses all the time! Do you think we could get rich if she sold them online or somethin’?” The ladies laughed. Wendy said “I was just asking your mom about that. I think if she invested a few more hours a day in making dresses, I could help her make LOTS of money!” “How could you do that?” Luke asked Wendy. “I have an MBA and I'm a stockbroker. I’ve also helped grow a few small, private businesses into large, publicly traded companies.” answered Wendy. Luke and his mom looked at Wendy, awaiting further explanation. Wendy could see she needed to explain further. “How it works is, a private company goes public so that people can buy shares in the company. When people buy shares, they are buying small pieces of the company and the company has more money to grow its business. In your mom’s case, she could use the money to hire workers to manufacture the clothing, pay for advertising, hire more staff, and stuff like that.” “So we’d use other people’s money to grow Mom’s business so we - I mean - she could get rich?” asked Luke, as his mother shook her head and smiled. “Exactly. And when other stockbrokers like myself research Designs by Wendy and find the company looks profitable, they’d invest their clients’ money in hopes that Designs by Wendy shares increase in value. If the shares did increase in value, the shareholders could sell some or all of their shares and make a profit. It would be a win-win for everyone.” Wendy paused. “Suzanne, what do you do in your spare time, when you aren't sewing or farming, if you don’t mind my asking?” “Well, when my husband needs help in the shop fixing an engine, I lend a hand. We saddle up the horses and check fences. Every weekend, we get together with friends to play guitars and sing. In the summer, we harness the team and load up the wagon with food and guitars and go camping on our property. My girlfriends and I get together most Sundays after church for crafting and visiting. I love my life. I wouldn't change a thing for all the money in the world.” She noticed a look of confusion coming over Wendy’s face. “Have you ever spent any time on a farm?” “Not really.” Wendy said, as a pang of jealousy hit her. Would I trade my 60 hour work weeks and greedy clients for the farm life? It actually sounds quite lovely… “Have you ever been camping?” Suzanne asked Wendy. “I think I prefer my cottage on the lake. I have to have cell service at all times. I went on vacation in Europe for 10 days two years ago. I desperately needed a break so I decided to turn off my phone and leave my assistant and associate in charge. Long story short, all hell broke loose. I lost two of my best clients. It was a nightmare!” Luke and his mom looked at each other, then at the stock broker. Luke broke the silence. “Have you ever rode a horse?” Wendy laughed. “No! I'd be terrified!” “You'd be fine. You’d need to take horseback riding lessons is all. Mom could show ya’. I bet you'd love it!” Wendy smiled “Maybe you're right.” The more she thought about riding a horse, the less terrifying it seemed. It actually did sound quite exciting. I need to get their phone number. “You know, I'd love to talk more with you about your son’s question-” Luke jumped in “About whether or not Mom could get rich?” “Precisely! I know talent and hard work when I see it. I could help you make millions and retire!” beamed Wendy. Suzanne thought for a moment, as a smile slowly spread across her face. She looked at her son, who was looking back at her intently. “So?!? What do you think?” beamed Wendy. Suzanne, still smiling, spoke slowly “I'm thinking, if I had millions of dollars, and I were retired, I would still take naps with my husband, ride my horses, go camping and sew. Nothing would change.” Wendy looked at Suzanne, dumbfounded by the realization that retirement isn’t the dream of those who love what they do for a living. Luke broke the silence “You should come to our farm for a horseback riding lesson sometime. And maybe you can help me get rich!” They all laughed. “Yes, Wendy, we would love to introduce you to the farm life...” Suzanne said as she pulled a piece of paper and pen from her purse and asked for Wendy’s phone number. “What are your plans next weekend?” “How sweet of you! I’d love to come out to your farm –” Wendy paused. “…on one condition: as long as your farm doesn’t have cell service!” From the book "39 Keys to Money Success for The 39 Forever Mom" by Lyndsie Barrie © 2018 by Barrie Financial Consulting Inc.
