Counsellor Bios

My name is Gabrielle Cotton and I am one of the counselors for Camp Fortress. I am currently in grade 12 and will be graduating this year. In the fall I am going to University of Toronto for sociology.
I have been babysitting since I was 12 years old.  Whenever I would babysit, I would try to come up with fun and interesting ideas for activities.  This was inspired by my time at summer camps and family experiences where we would play with learning.  One of my favourite memories was making a laser obstacle course (we used yarn, not real lasers) for one of my kids.  We played Mission Impossible games all day!  It occurred to me that if I could share this with one child; why not share it with more - the more the merrier. Thus, the concept of “Camp Fortress” was created. I shared this idea with some friends; we talked about how we were all going to be babysitting this summer, we came up with idea of combining the families and having all the kids in my backyard to play games and do crafts. You have to understand, my backyard is not an ordinary backyard…it is almost 2/3 of an acre with a sports pad, pool, lots of open space and a cabin (well, it is a shed, but our friends think it is a cabin because it is so large).  Inspired by these ideas and our resources, we applied for a grant, and registered our business. We are very excited for the camp this summer!!  We want your children to share with us in a fun, filled summer, with lots of great activities and learning!!

A little more about me…
My early experiences with learning in a fun environment have enabled me to have the courage to be innovative at my school and in the community.
I have been heavily involved with my school since grade 10. I formed a council called Arts Council and was president for three years; in those three years we gained 40 members, and raised over $3000, successfully running many events. As a result of my experience with this I then decided to run the “Women in Politics Conference” last September, this conference was designed to inspire and educate young girls to become involved in politics. It featured Former Deputy Prime Minister Sheila Copps, and we had over 200 attendees. Thanks to the support of the Brantford Women’s Probus and the Brant Community Foundation we received a $5000 grant for this conference. Running events is something that I thoroughly enjoy.  As a result of this work, I have received a scholarship from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for my studies at the University of Toronto.

I am excited to share this summer with some great kids and see where we can go with fun and learning!!
