Known worldwide Petrovac's hand-woven carpets (rugs, kilims) are the result of centuries of tradition, that has been charished since the time when the first kilims arrived in the Bosanska Krajina from Anatolia, and immediately found themselves at home, so to speak. That probably happened during the seventeenth century.

The main characteristics of Petrovac's carpets are the branching "tree of life", decorated with rhomboid and hexagonal patterns, zigzagged shaped stairs and other symbols. The carpets were woven in red, black, green, yellow, blue and white wool from local sheep that graze on the endless plains of Petrovac's moorlands.
The tradition was briefly threatened in recent decades of the twentieth century, due to the invasion of the standardized industrial rug production. The traditional production was even interrupted during the war conflict in the region (1992-1995.).
Today, the traditional hand-woven tapesery is reestablished again. The skilled Petrovac's embroideresses have chance to return to weaving again, with new looms. The first 50 looms were donated by the Turkish Agency for International Development and Cooperation (TIKA). With these looms there's possibility to weave carpets of maximum 3m width, with limitless lenght-depends on your  order.
