Sandridge School is a school 'of and for community'.  At Sandridge School, we are working to establish a new paradigm for schooling that is diverse, inclusive, accessible, connected and purposefully committed to generating the citizens of the future.   To achieve this, education must leverage the collective impact of the entire community.

Curious about the teaching and learning program at Sandridge? After focusing on core skills in the morning, we then centre our educational program around Learning Explorations. These issues based explorations have an outward flow, as students use their acquired knowledge and skills to connect with authentic audiences in either the local, national or global community. Through our Learning Explorations, we aim to create the space for actioning learning for genuine feedback and to equip our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute positively to the world we all live in. Here is a snapshot of what our students are doing during Term 1. In the Foundation classes, our students are exploring the topic, ‘How do I keep myself safe and healthy?’. Via this learning exploration, the kids will be getting to know their new school environment and learning to shape themselves as a learning community. As part of their connecting learning to purpose and engaging with an authentic audience, our Foundies will be creating an infographic about how to learn creatively, play inclusively and collaboratively create a safe school community across the year levels. They will be presenting this to the rest of the school by the end of the Term. Our Yr 1s are examining their strengths and how they can use them to help others. Focusing on the strengths of fairness, kindness and teamwork as key strengths for participating successfully in social activities; our students will learn by teaching about them to younger community members. Our students will also identify social and emotional needs of the local kindergarten and work collaboratively to design workshops to help build the young students character strengths. They will investigate and design activities to build different strengths and how these can help us prosper as young citizens. Meanwhile in Yr 2, our students are exploring what we can learn from the past about how communities form and the role buildings play in creating those communities. They will then use this understanding to become key advisors to our architects in the planning of Sam’s Boatshed renovations to commence at Easter – now that is an authentic audience and actioning real outcomes! Our Yr 3s are grappling with the issue of world peace – just to bite off a small topic! They will be exploring the underlying factors for conflict and how conflict can be resolved, starting with a big picture global context but actioning their learning in a very local context, forming new partnerships with western district schools through our contacts, our students will develop a peace accord and framework for conflict resolution. To guide their learning, the Yr 3s will be learning from specialists in peace studies via Rotary International and collaborating with UN agencies, as part of this process. Our Yr 4s have kicked the year off with a very timely issue, debating the celebration of Australia Day. They will explore the nature of national celebrations, their benefits and their challenges. Connecting with the Australia Day Council, local migrant communities and MITS for authentic audience, they will conclude their investigation with a recommendation to be presented to the local council communities for consideration. Our Yr 5s are tackling the question of whether or not all influential people are good. Using the brilliant timing of the redesigning of Australia’s currency!, our Yr 5s will study the change makers and contributing citizens that could be considered for inclusion on the new note collection. Reaching out to the The Reserve Bank of Australia’s Design Advisory Panel for an authentic audience, the Yr 5s will discuss the factors that drive such choices and present a submission for valid candidates for the next series of bank notes. Our Yr 6s are capping off a powerful first term of actioned learning at Sandridge by exploring the issue of epidemics and asking if they can be avoided. Working with health professionals and health organisations in both mental and physical health, our students will aim to create and implement a solution to the issue of ‘how to avoid an epidemic’ by creating a digital learning resource that can be accessed and used by young people in the wider community or teachers in classrooms across schools.

One of the many highlights of the week at Sandridge is the Friday afternoon RAFTs. It's the opportunity to come together across age groups and build the strong bonds we have as a community through shared play. Today was all about providing the school with more games and opportunites for the children to explore and is a theme we'll cotinue all term. This included one Ms. Fenton dusting off the boots to show everybody how she spent her youth! It was a a lovely way to finish off the first week back in Term 3. It has been a whirlwind start to the term with new units of work including palentology & fairy tales, excursions, aikido and drama. Brendan Savage

A big thankyou to Angela, Alex & David Weston who gifted the staff with some Sandridge school designer Coffee mugs. The Westons have obviously noted or correctly assumed that the staff have what some people may describe as an enthusiastic love of coffee and these mugs will make it all the sweeter!! Thank you Westons for helping to keep us warm and full of zing! Brendan Savage.

Under Mr Bevan's guidance, the Yr 4s have begun a teacher/mentor program, whereby one of the students learns something and then teaches it to another student. As educators, we know that one of the best ways to consolidate learning is to teach what you have learned to someone else. Here, the Yr 4s are working through a maths sequence – teaching each other and thriving as learners in the process. Nice work, Mr Bevan and our yr 4s!

Our Yr 4 students have been working with Collective Campus this year, to develop entrepreneurial mindsets. This week, the Yr 4s took to the train and then led the way from Flinders St station down to the Collective Campus headquarters in Queens St, with Mr Bevan and Ms fenton in toe! There, they worked with Steve Glaveski and Sean Qian to explore how real world problems can be addressed through business ideas that have a direct positive social impact. Using design thinking principles, the students identified social issues that mattered to them. They then identified real world examples of those issues, which opened up avenues for real solutions. Once a solution had been identified, they then examined the market, worked through necessary resources for developing their business idea and scoped out budgets for development of their product. They came up with some brilliant ideas! From apps to create safe internet searches, to low cost hotels for families who need to stay near hospitals to care for ill family, to apps for carpooling, all our students engaged in learning that was entrepreneurial and focused on creating a better world for all to live in. In doing so, they were bringing the Sandridge vision for education to life …. Superb work, Year 4!

Cave Hill Creek near Beaufort was the site of the first ever Sandridge Camp. Parents, teachers and kids were a buzz on Wednesday morning, feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement - and then teachers and kids were on the bus and the fun began ... Canoeing, raft building, abseiling, bouldering, cycling, archery, hut building and don't forget the chickens - quite the highlight! Teachers and students alike had a fantastic time in what was a rich opportunity for risk taking, team building, adventure and friendships ... a perfect Sandridge experience!

Well, what a game at Etihad Stadium today!! A pretty exciting AFL game, it is true, but the real highlight of the day came at half time 😊 Caelan and Gus starred in the Auskick showcase. Caelan took a screamer, a la Cyril, and then rivalled Sammy Mitchell as he grabbed the ball and ran out of the pack. Gus stood shoulder to shoulder with James Sicily, kicking 3 Goals in the game! Caelan attends Auskick at McIvor reserve Yarraville. Gus and Louis go to Auskick at Hansen reserve Yarraville, which is part of the North Footscray football club. Sam Norton is coaching the kids this year and the club is keen to have more kids join. So get on down and sign up, if you are looking for a club to join - the coach is pretty good! Loving seeing our Sandridge kids (and Dads!) thriving as members of their local community sporting teams - true Sandridgians!
