New technology at Westmead private allows our Physiotherapy team to assess and treat abdominal separation following birth. Today Tenielle from our physiotherapy team helped mum Bouchra understand how to activate her abdominal and pelvic floor muscles with the help of a portable ultrasound and ipad. During pregnancy, the growing uterus puts pressure on your abdominal muscles. This can cause the muscles to separate in a condition known as abdominal separation or rectus abdominus diastasis (RAD). The condition can be associated with lower back pain, constipation, urine leaking and difficulty moving normally. The separation usually decreases after giving birth, but physiotherapy advice and exercises can assist with maximising the recovery and decreasing possible complications.

This week we farewelled Leona Higgins - one of our long standing employees in theatre. Leona has been with us since opening our doors in 2000 working along side our doctors in theatre as a scrub nurse. We wish Leona all the best as she relocates to the Gold Coast. I am pleased to report that Leona will be starting up at another Ramsay facility when she arrives. We will miss her smiling face around Westmead Private and wish her all the best in her new adventure.

Meet Georgi who contracted a kidney infection three years ago, she then started to get constant pain and was diagnosed with Loin Pain Haematuria Syndrome - a rare syndrome which has debilitating unilateral or bilateral flank pain. Georgi saw lots of specialists and psychologists to try and get to the bottom of the cause of her pain, then she met Prof Howard Lau (Urologist). Last week Prof Lau and his transplant team performed a robotic autotransplant (the 2nd in Australia) on Georgi's right kidney - on her 23rd birthday. Six days later Georgi is pain free and looking forward to getting on with her life. Just another great example of the amazing work our surgeons do each day at Westmead Private. We wish Georgi all the best for a speedy recovery and a life with no more pain.

Meet artist Sarah Tracton who was born with moderate hearing loss and after eventually losing her hearing completely received her 1st cochlear implant in 2013. Today Sarah underwent her 2nd cochlear implant under Prof Melville DaCruz - ENT Surgeon. Following Sarah's 1st surgery things became brighter, colours and the tactility of materials felt more intense. We look forward to seeing more of Sarah's art following her recovery from surgery today.
