Merry Christmas from Geoff and Sharon Mclean at Utow Caravan Hire. The holidays are the time when most people drag out their camper or caravan, hook it up and head off to enjoy the investment. There are however some safety issues you should consider before you go. If you have time, the van should be given a full service. Brakes and bearings are all checked professionally. But as the driver there are still things you must do to make sure your rig is safe. Check the tyres for air pressure, cracks or cuts. Did you know that tyres should not be more than 6 years old? Old tyres are much more likely to have problems. Check all of your lights. Are your brakes working? With electric brakes you should be able to feel the brakes operating. A good read of the instructions if you are not sure how they work. You probably need towing mirrors. Are your gas bottles in date and full? It’s always a good idea to light your fridge on gas if the van has been stored. Better to find out it is not working before you leave home. Often just a bit of spider web can cause a failure. Have a good look over every aspect of the van or camper. Make sure everything is bolted securely, tightened up, not rusted or damaged. If you have not done much towing, keep your speed down on the road. The faster you drive the faster things can go wrong. But remember to pull over and let others pass your slower vehicle.
