Human health is in crisis, principally because of the recent outbreak of pandemic diabetes and obesity. The incidence of diabetes is progressively increasing at a rate of 2-3% per year, despite a variety of new drugs being continuously brought to clinics around the world. Obesity, with an even higher incidence rate, is one of the critical factors contributing to the development of diabetes. The latter disease is currently affecting approximately 387 million people and conservatively projected to affect approximately 7 billion persons – the current world population – by the year 2160 assuming its incidence climbs an annual 2% (see graph). This would be an absolute catastrophe threatening the entire human race, and imposing a tremendous social and economical burden on the global society. The disease, diabetes mellitus, was first described 3000 years ago, by its major feature of excess sugar in urine and blood. Chronic high blood sugar levels damage blood vessels in multiple organs that result in many diseases including heart and kidney diseases, blindness and even cancers. One of the critical causes for developing diabetes is the body not producing enough of the hormone called insulin to utilize excess blood sugar. This lack of circulating insulin could be due to either deficiency of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas (type 1 diabetes) or the inability of diseased cells to produce insulin (type 2 diabetes). Insulin injections could reduce symptoms, but accompanying this are devastating complications. HealthRegen has been established to fully commit to making a difference – by implementing two strategies to halt and ultimately eradicate the diabetic pandemic problem. HealthRegen is exceptionally empowered with vast expertise and experience in pancreas endocrinology and diabetes ideology, management and regenerative medicine - accumulated over the last 20 years both in Australia and overseas. HealthRegen aims to achieve its first strategy in two years: to conduct feasibility studies on how to innovatively utilize beneficial components for human health, in particular for people with diabetes for the production of healthy dietary supplements , that suit the consumption of the general population, in particularly people with diabetes worldwide. HealthRegen’s long-term core strategy is to develop a next-generation therapy that restores the function of failed insulin-producing cells and regenerate health of global diabetic sufferers. HealthRegen possesses several intellectual properties including, but not exclusively in, stem cells, generating insulin-producing cells and maturation of the latter cells. Thus, HealthRegen is ideally placed to achieve this ultimate goal and welcomes the partnership and collaboration of everyone with similarly aligned passions and required expertise, and anyone willing to invest in this great cause.
