Stuff like this really frustrates me as a fully licensed plumber. There is a reason we undertake 6years of college and spend a small fortune to retain our licenses. As a result of this dodgy set up there is thousands to spend in repairs upstairs. Although a "handyman" may be cheaper there is a clear reason why and can cost you a fortune in the long run.

Here we have a severely blocked sewer as the pipework had snapped on a bend tree roots were able to grow straight into the pipe. Section was removed and replaced with an inspection opening raised to surface level for any future blockages.
