Doctors and Specialists advised that operating on my 2 bulging disks was the only option for 5 years of chronic pain and sciatic numbness caused by a car accident in my late 20’s. Having read many books on how the body has infinite intelligence to heal itself, the idea of having an operation on my spine was not an option, so I had to go in search of one.
Why did I leave it that long before seeking advice? I thought if I ignored it for long enough the pain would go away (sound familiar)
It became unbearable and to be honest, the thought of my future in a wheelchair gave me the drive to find SOMETHING other than surgery.
A Specialist suggested surgery
A friend suggested yoga...
I was very apprehensive about going to a class as it was my understanding one had to be flexible, a vegetarian and show an uncanny talent with a tambourine.
My first yoga class I needed assistance getting down onto the mat, nearly every move I made was either incredibly painful or inaccessible and frustration rose its head on many occasion at not being able to do the simplest of moves. My ego tried to push through the pain and soon found out that it’s not the yoga way of doing things – One of the 8 limbs Ahimsa (non-violence) I was very fortunate to have found a traditional, dedicated yoga teacher with acute awareness around chronic pain and anatomy. He gave me the tools to overcome years of chronic pain and sleepless nights, and I am talking years!
After 7 years of Craig’s guidance and free of pain I then embarked on my yoga teacher training with Master John Ogilvie at Byron Yoga Centre. I had to share this knowledge and pass on that it is possible to heal yourself.
I have continued my passion for learning and developing new skills by attending workshops, on-going personal research and sharing the gifts yoga continually gives, to the ever-growing community of yoga lovers. I’ve been a yogi for 11 years and teaching for 4 years and never looked back.
The style I teach is mainly Hatha with attention to detail and alignment. I make hands-on adjustments and teach with humour and an open heart and a genuine passion for helping people to connect with their bodies and empower them to look beyond the physical, keeping it real, grounded and accessible.
I look back on my journey and I know that yoga has changed my life on so many levels. I am grateful for every teacher and the tools yoga has given me to live a more peaceful, compassionate pain-free life. What a Gift.
Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured.
