I am a big fan of therapies that work with the body. Moving through what is stuck physically can often have powerful effects when talking and practices that are mind related fail. Here is Peter Levine, the creator of Somatic experiencing, explaining the basic principles. Biologically we have a survival (flight, flight, freeze) response to trauma. Animals tend to come out of this cycle easily, where as humans become scared of the feelings and emotions that come with moving back into balance (like a surge of rage or sadness). We will often shut down this cycle in fear which then compounds it as we bring a to fight to keep it at bay. This therapy allows someone to be present with the trauma somatically, to come out slowly until they are back in balance. An awesome snippet from a Webinar Eckhart Tolle did through Sounds True. It was live yesterday right here in Australia!!!. I really like his description of the mind. Many people think these teachings are supposed to get rid of thinking entirely but actually thinking is a sense just like smelling or hearing, but it has become so over used that identify with it as who we are. When we practice presence we cultivate an inner stillness which is closer to who we really are, then we can tame thinking to use it as a tool, rather then be a slave to it. I also like that you can practice with him, entraining with his ability to do this which will help you as you look at him. This is paramount because it is an experience, rather then another intellectual exercise which is another habit we all seem to be addicted to.
