Rest periods & athletic development Christian Woodford B.App.Sci (HONS) Tag.comment.like. Rest periods are one of the most CRITICAL loading parameters that many coaches/trainees miss in programming. Rest periods dictate your training goal (strength, power, speed, hypertrophy, fat loss etc) & the amount of neuromuscular recovery (ATP- PC, neural, removal of metabolic bi products). An example of this would be training for maximal strength which requires athletes to lift heavy loads (over 80% 1RM) for low repetitions (1-6) which requires maximal efforts & fast twitch fibre recruitment. It would be incompetent of us to program short rest periods as this would not allow enough recovery between sets to maintain the correct intensity (weight) needed to complete the set. Remember it's the weight lifted (intensity) that stimulates adaptation and increases in strength for the athlete. If rest periods are not long enough and allow not enough neuromuscular recovery the athletes performance in the lift deceases and will need to drop the weight (intensity) meaning you are de training. Strength is not about the pump but about progression. This is why rest periods are critical for programming for the athlete and eliciting the correct training response. Just training to failure is not always the best stimulus and for strength, power or speed fatigue is a terrible environment to facilitate these critical athletic attributes. Shout out & congratulations to my man Michael Barnes on taking out the B & F for St Bedes (VAFA- A grade). First athlete I signed to WSSC and still going strong, like Jesse Plostins is like the furniture at WSSC and can't imagine life without the kid. You are a true pro mate cya next week to start off season work and a HUGE season 2018 for St Bedes 🔥🔥🔥 Due to the folding of VFL development league amateur football will rise another level. I now have former interns who oversee the entire physical preparation of amateur based teams with some purchasing GPS units to track and monitor running load and speeds (then make sure athletes are hitting the speed zones they need to best prepare for competition). I enjoy coaching the amateur athlete as I do the pro as the massive difference I can evoke on their sporting performance and preventing injuries. I will take on 3 (ONLY) more athletes for this off season block email Christian@woodfordssc.com and answer questions; Name; Age; Sport: Highest level; Goals 3; physical Previous injuries; Yes or no; Front squat Back squat RDL Deadlift - straight bar Clean Snatch Jerk For coaching with my staff email info@woodfordssc.com or DM. #wssc #changingthegame Jimmy Colyvan Joel McKee Brayden O'Toole

WSSC welcomes 5 new athletes to our Moorabbin and Casey facility. Kieren Reith, Emma Winton, Declan Bishop, Christian Cairns, Dylan Mooney and Luke Matson. New Moorabbin Athletes: Kieran is the lucky winner of a silent auction that has given him the opportunity to work with performance coach Brett for 3 sessions. Looking to asses basic motor patterns and mobilise as much as possible in the lead up to a big 2018 cricket season! Emma had chosen performance coach Brett as she aims to rehabilitate numerous issues with the knees, including with previous surgeries not healing to the extent that is desired. Through teaching of correct lifting and motor patterns, Emma will be able to lift safely and pain free. New Casey Athletes: Declan is a member of the Bunyip Strikers Soccer Club and is aiming to have a big pre-season as he recovers from a kneecap dislocation. He is now well into his recovery and rehab and will look to build a solid strength base to cope with the running demands of pre-season and the confidence needed to return to sprinting, jumping and cutting at full speed. Christian is looking at returning to football post his ACL reconstruction and is in the end stages of his rehab, building strength, stability and confidence back to play at his best. Young gun Dylan is a soccer player at Glen Eira and part of the FTS development squad and is looking to build a strong foundation as he recovers from some hip issues that plagued his 2017 season. Lastly but not hard to miss is Beaconsfield footballer Luke Matson who after a solid growth spurt is aiming to learn how to develop into his frame, improve his running mechanics and efficiency and learn how to add strength and conditioning to his training. Great to see a variety of athletes coming down and looking to get a head start on next year putting in the ground work now. What's your favourite exercise ? Here we have director of performance Christian Woodford (give him a follow on his personal Facebook he likes that 😂✔️) completing the upper body horizontal pulling movement the db row. We at WSSC are big believers in developing the posterior chain (both lower & upper body) and educate our athletes on the importance of completing strength programming of a 1:1 push- pull ratio. The horizontal pulling movement is critical as it's a true antagonistic movement to the bench press which as we have seen many athletes over emphasise. The other added benefit is development of the upper back and stabilisation of the scapula which is critical for shoulder health. Cues; Full protraction - retraction cue head of numerous out of socket Row to hip pocket Trunk parallel to the ground - or close too Using Dumbbells allows greater range of motion Coach Athlete to isometrically hold each rep for 3 s for neural drive Info@woodfordssc.com or PM. #wssc #changingthegame
