A MUSICAL BOOST WITH MORE NEEDED: A $1000 donation from the fabulous Pink Ladies was matched by the Mental Health Service, and has been a brilliant boost for the Hornsby Adult Mental Health unit music and memory program. As part of the pilot program, the unit was provided with 15 MP3 players, on which personalised playlists are set up to support consumers in their recovery. Since the program began in October, consumers have reported that they have been able to use the music to reduce agitation, improve mood and manage withdrawal symptoms. Donations in the form of iTune cards, new headphones, and new or used MP3 players are needed by the unit, and can be dropped in to the Adult Mental Health Unit at Hornsby Hospital, or send via mail to ‘Adult Mental Health Unit Music & Memory Program, Hornsby Hospital, Palmerston Road, Hornsby, NSW 2077’. More information about the Music and Memory Program can be found on: http://www.artshealthinstitute.org.au/Arts-in-Health/Music-Memory.aspx Pictured are some of our wonderful team: Chris; and the group from left to right: Dianne, Jane, Steve, Leanne, Rupi, Bonny, Chris, Emil, Katie and Rurian.

HEALTHY RESOLUTIONS: Have you thought about your New Year’s resolutions? Here are 5 simple resolution ideas that are do-able, and may improve your health too! 1. Make healthy normal. Ditch the idea of the big lifestyle overhaul and make small changes that’ll stick, like having one more serve of vegies a day, or walking instead of driving down to the shops. You can find ideas athttps://www.makehealthynormal.nsw.gov.au/ 2. Get more sleep. Research says that sleep deprivation can affect your mood and your waistline. Plan to get more shut-eye and enjoy the difference! For more on getting a good night’s sleep go to http://www.sleephealthfoundation.org.au/public-information/fact-sheets-a-z/187-good-sleep-habits.html 3. Drink your coffee at home. Not only will it save you dollars but possibly quite a few kilojoules too - because you don’t have the temptation of any enticing extras such as flavoured syrups or a muffin.. 4. Accumulate some steps. Even short bouts of walking can add up and equal better health and a trimmer waistline. Add 5 more minutes of walking a day. 5. Be kind to yourself and others. Sounds a bit corny but it could make you happier and improve your health as well. Research says that kindness can give us healthier hearts, and reduce inflammation. What are your healthy resolutions for 2017?

FOURTH CASE OF MEASLES DETECTED IN SYDNEY THIS MONTH: NSW Health is again urging people to watch for symptoms of measles after another young adult contracted the highly contagious disease in Sydney following three cases reported earlier this month. The four cases reported in Sydney since early December have spent considerable time in the Sydney metropolitan area while infectious. The most recent case, who was a known contact of one of the earlier cases, had visited a number of locations between 23-24 December while infectious, including restaurants and shops in Leichardt, Pyrmont and Neutral Bay, and public transport on routes in the inner west. For more info on measles and what to watch out for go to http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Pages/Measles_Factsheet.aspx

Take your Christmas gift giving for the kids up a notch this year with some fun gift ideas from our Health Promotion team. They say to look for toys that encourage movement: Throwing, bouncing, rolling or catching: beach ball, bath sponges, small bean bags, quoits, foam dice, magnetic or Velcro darts, mini soccer goals or a basketball hoop. Chase: balloons, bubbles, kite, frisbee, butterfly catcher. Promote dancing & movement: music CDs, dance wands, ribbons/streamers, pom poms, percussion instruments like a tambourine or clapping sticks, skipping ropes, floor mat games like hopscotch or giant snakes and ladders. Objects for an obstacle course: witches hats, crawling tunnel, hula hoops. Get outside: kids gardening tools and wheelbarrows, bikes, boogie boards, scooters, or a camera to take on ‘photography bush walks’. Babies and toddlers: a large blanket for floor based play (inside or out), rattles, mirrored toys and toys that reward movement, push along equipment, soft play cubes and blocks. Children should be physically active for at least 3 hours every day. All children need fundamental movement skills for enjoyment and success in physical activity from childhood through to adulthood. When choosing gifts this season, choose those that will benefit kids for life and are a bit of fun – all designed to keep kids active. For more information and ideas about kids and physical activity, see: www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/parents-carers/physical-activity.aspx

CHRISTMAS APPEAL: Each year, more than 1200 babies are born at our hospital. That's why this year the Maternity Unit is the focus of our Annual Christmas Campaign. We hope the campaign will help us buy another specialised foetal heart monitor like the one that helped Turramurra Mum Cymbeline Johnson through her double delivery in October. The monitor (which costs $40,000) allows data to be transmitted wirelessly so mums can move around all they want during labour while knowing their baby's heart rate is being accurately monitored. It also provides comprehensive info about mum - her heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels. If you'd like to make a donation (big or small) towards the purchase of the monitor call 94779459. Donations over $2 are tax deductible!
