Happy New Year's Eve everyone! This weekend we honour the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. The feast is a celebration of Mary's motherhood of Jesus. The English title "Mother of God" is a translation of the Latin title Dei Genetricis, which means "She Who Generated God". This title was dogmatically adopted at the First Council of Ephesus (431)[4] as a way to assert that Jesus is God, and that his mother can therefore be called Mother of God. This feast day was also traditionally a Holy Day of Obligation meaning attendance at Mass was compulsory. We hope you will set aside some time over this holiday weekend to join us for Holy Mass either tonight at 6pm or Sunday morning at 7:30am or 9:30am. Start 2017 the right way and make some time for our Blessed Mother and ask her for her prayers and protection over the next year. Happy New Year!

Have you noticed the two paintings that have been placed at the side altars of our church in celebration of Christmas? At the Altar of the Sacred Heart is the painting of the Annunciation by Italian painter Francesco Albani (1578-1660). This painting is a reminder of the act of courage of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the Altar of Our Lady is the painting of the Holy Nativity by Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre (1714-1789). This painting completes the sequence begun with the painting of the Annunciation. It allows us to contemplate the birth of our Lord two thousand years ago because of the simple act of faith of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Today marks the Feast of the Holy Innocents. We remember the small children of Bethlehem put to death by Herod in an attempt to be protect his throne. It was only because Joseph was warned through a dream that he was able to flee with Mary and Jesus, sparing our Lord. ___ O God, Whose praise the martyred innocents did this day proclaim, Not by speaking, but by dying: Destroy in us all the malice of sinfulness, That our lives may also proclaim thy faith, which our tongues profess. Through our Lord, Amen

St. Stephen HD

Today we honour the feast of St Stephen, one of the first martyrs of the church. View the video clip below to learn more about this saint. Lord Jesus, you chose Stephen as the first deacon and martyr of your One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. The heroic witness of his holy life and death reveals your continued presence among us. Through following the example of his living faith, and by his intercession, empower us by your Holy Spirit to live as witnesses to the faith in this New Missionary Age. No matter what our state in life, career or vocation, help us to proclaim, in both word and in deed, the fullness of the Gospel to a world which is waiting to be born anew in Jesus Christ. Pour out upon your whole Church, the same Holy Spirit which animated St Stephen, Martyr, to be faithful to the end, which is a beginning of life eternal in the communion of the Trinity.
