What mineral has been shown to reduce pregnancy complications? A recent study highlights how important zinc is in reducing complications in 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy as well as reducing the risk for preterm delivery and stillbirth. Just how incredible is this information! And of course it needs to be the correct absorbable form and the correct therapeutic dose. I regularly check my patients zinc levels and ensure it is optimised. http://1.usa.gov/1nW0Ptn

A commonly used medication, acetaminophen, also known as Paracetemol has been the centre of Spanish study. Presumed to be safe in pregnancy, this research is showing otherwise. 2644 mums and bubs were included in the study, with the researchers measuring Paracetemol use during pregnancy and brain development at 1 and 5 years of age. If mum took Paracetemol in pregnancy, their children were 30% more likely to have symptoms of hyperactivity or impulsivity at the age of 5. The researchers found boys with prenatal acetaminophen exposure were more likely to have clinical symptoms of autism than non-exposed boys. WHAT!!! This is incredible research, and really highlights that as a baby's brain is developing in pregnancy, it is vulnerable to harmful substances. Maybe next time you have a headache, reach for the magnesium instead. http://bit.ly/29RAJEN
