Good morning all! If you have last minute needs for your pets such as an issue that has been bugging them for a while- Sore ears? Itchy skin? Losing weight for no reason? Enough medication to get you through the holiday period? To avoid disappointment please book your appointment now as we are closed Monday and Tuesday next week for public holidays, and expect to be busy this Saturday. WE ARE ON CALL 24/7 as per usual, public holidays included. We have some spare appointments tonight until 7pm if you are unable to make it during usual business hours. And most important of all, have a wonderful Christmas and New Year. We want to thank all our wonderful clients and patients for the past few months. We have been overwhelmed by you all and love seeing your smiling faces in the clinic. Stay safe and enjoy.

Has anyone got any spare old towels or sheets? We need them for our isolation room (mainly for parvovirus cases). They can be really old as we only use them once, then they are disposed off because of the risk of spreading the virus. Thanks for all your support!

We all love spoiling our pets, however sometimes this can result in poisonings or other diseases such as pancreatitis. Here are the main culprits over the Holiday period: - Chocolate - Alcohol - Ham Fat/skin- A large dose of fat can trigger pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) which is painful and potentially fatal. - Cooked bones- these more easily pierce the gut as they splinter. Raw bones that are not small enough to be swallowed are great for cleaning teeth and keeping them occupied. - Grapes or raisins - Large seeds such as Mangoes or Corn Cobs are easily stuck in the gut and will require surgical removal- this is expensive - Lollies - Onions and Garlic- these cause Red Blood Cells to breakdown which can lead to anaemia - Bait- especially left on hooks. Again surgical removal is often needed. So please choose healthy treats for your pet. These can include a portion of their daily kibble frozen into iceblocks that they have to work for. Dried liver treats, Educ- a low calorie option for animals trying to lose weight etc.

With Christmas just around the corner we have a few reminders for pet owners: -Check their vaccinations are up to date- especially if they are going to kennels. And we are also still getting Parvo cases weekly. Any dog that is over 16 weeks old only needs a single vaccine to bring them up to date and our Duramune vaccine will last for three years. - Please check your pet's food supply- are you going to have enough over Christmas/NY? Also consider natural disasters such as cyclones that may affect your ability to buy food. - Is you pet on medication? If so, make sure you have enough to last. - Parasite control- Are you going to an area that has Paralysis Ticks (the wet tropics on the coast, Tablelands etc)? Paralysis Ticks can kill your animals and require expensive and intensive care to save them. Fleas are also in high numbers at the moment. We still have some cute Christmas toys for your dogs and cats to put under the tree!

Are you going away in the summer holidays? Does your pet need to go in to kennels or boarding facilities? Your pet must be up to date with vaccinations to be accepted into establishments. Vaccinations need to be given a minimum of 10 days before they enter a boarding facility to allow time for their immune system to work. We want you to be able to go on your holiday!! If your animal does not meet the vaccination requirements of the facility they may not be able to stay there. Please avoid the last minute rush around Christmas when time and money (as well as appointments) are short. Call us on 07 4787 4949 for availability of appointments and to discuss your pet's vaccine timing. Have a lovely night, The team at Gold City Vets
