Students from Bunbury Senior High School’s Shed Works program joined with City of Bunbury workers today to plant 3000 seedlings in a Koombana Drive “rain garden”. The landscaped area between the newly surfaced road and footpath performs an important function of bio-filtration by capturing and filtering stormwater runoff to remove pollutants. The rain garden uses the biological and physical function of plants and soil microbiology to remove pollutants such as excess fertiliser and litter contained in stormwater runoff from the road and adjacent urban areas. This process improves the quality of water entering waterways, in this case the Leschenault Inlet. This project is supported by the South West Catchments Council, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme, and the City of Bunbury through the Regional Road Group.

The Department of Sport and Recreation has kicked in a further $40,000 in funding following the overwhelming success of the City of Bunbury’s SilverSport pilot program. More than 360 people have already taken advantage of the SilverSport program in Bunbury, which allows eligible seniors to access funding that can go towards fees for eligible sport and recreation activities. The State Government’s SilverSport program provides up to $200 to help seniors to stay active in their community. The $40,000 boost will mean even more seniors can take advantage of the program, which had initial funding of $90,000. The SilverSport program helps eligible seniors, who might not otherwise be able to join a sport or recreation club, to keep fit, healthy, active and socially connected using sport and recreation centres, seniors' fitness classes and clubs. To be eligible, applicants need to live in the City of Bunbury, be aged 60 years or over and have a valid health care card or pensioner concession card. Applications can be made via the link below or by collecting an application form from the South West Sports Centre, City’s administration centre at 4 Stephen Street, Bunbury Library or Withers Library. http://www.bunbury.wa.gov.au/pdf/Community/SilverSport%20-%20City%20of%20Bunbury%20Application%20Form.pdf

Sports fans young and old were able to get up close to rugby league’s greatest prize yesterday when the Paul Barrière Trophy came to Bunbury. The prized silverware was on show at the Hay Park South Multi Sports Pavilion, Bunbury’s home of rugby league, to promote the Rugby League World Cup 2017 and also help raise the profile of the sport in the South West. NRL WA Operations Manager Tony Crowe and Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan were both pleased to see the trophy in Bunbury and also the many people who turned out to have their photo taken with it. The Rugby League World Cup 2017 will be co-hosted by Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea from 27 October to 2 December and includes a European double-header featuring England against France and Ireland taking on Wales at nib Stadium in Perth on 12 November. Signs warning of toxic sea hares have been removed today, however, dog owners are still being urged to exercise caution when taking their furry friends to Bunbury beaches. Hundreds of the aquatic creatures were washed up last week from Mindalong to BP Beach and they posed a threat to dogs because of a dangerous toxin they excrete. It appears most of the slug-like creatures, which are black and about 30cm in length, have been washed away but dog owners are still urged to be vigilant. Symptoms to look out for include over excitement, tremors, seizures, drooling or vomiting. If you believe your dog has ingested a sea hare or is showing the above symptoms please contact your vet immediately. Please share this post with fellow pet owners.

Thanks to everyone who attended our Forum last night to continue the discussion about how we can all play a role in enhancing Bunbury’s CBD. The City can assure people that it is listening to community with a range of recommendations to be presented to Council for their deliberation in the coming weeks. Mayor Gary Brennan said it was important that a collaborative approach involving the City, businesses and community was taken with early feedback showing that all stakeholders were very keen to make a difference. The Forum followed a recent CBD Experience Survey that attracted 801 respondents. A summary of the survey is available from the City of Bunbury website – http://www.bunbury.wa.gov.au/pdf/Council/CBD%20Experience%20Survey.pdf

Koombana Bay Foreshore revitalisation update Work has begun on one of the key aspects of the foreshore work with the construction of a sea wall now well under way. The wall will provide increased protection from coastal erosion and involves the strategic placement of large rocks to create a revetment. The site will also undergo significant change with the imminent removal of the old rail line. A rail reserve will be retained for future use if required. And construction of the new footbridge is also expected to begin very soon. This should take 10 to 12 weeks and the results will be worth waiting for! Just a reminder that the pedestrian bridge and the foreshore are closed to the public while construction is ongoing. Access to the beach, however, can be gained via the Dolphin Discovery Centre, which is open throughout the redevelopment.
