We run iconic Adventure Racing events including XPD, Australia's Expedition Race and the Mountain Designs GeoQuest 48hr Adventure Race. Geocentric Outdoors is leading the way in outdoor adventure event management and organisation in Australia. Geocentric's focus is conducting highly organised and professional events to challenge entrants. In addition to putting on great races, we also have a key focus on safety and minimal impact to the environment.

Geocentric Outdoors, then called Geocentric Adventure Racing was born in early 2002 in response to the limited opportunities to compete in adventure races. It began with the 48 Hour Mountain Designs GeoQuest. After a nervous 5 months of hard work, the event was run. The race was daunting, hard and exceptionally challenging for all competitors. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive and now years later the Mountain Designs GeoQuest is Australia's most competitive and premier adventure race.

Following this first ground breaking race, the organisers set to filling another gap - while there were now several "harder" races in Australia, where did someone with little experience begin? Also what about some fun? The 6 Hour Adventure Series of races was created. The series proved to be a huge success and was quickly sponsored by the outdoor footwear giant Teva. Over the 4 years Geocentric ran these races, the series grew to become the largest and most popular national sprint adventure racing series.

Inspired by great races overseas and the desire to give Australians a true expedition race in their own country, Geocentric Outdoors embarked on the mammoth task of organising XPD. It was a 5-10 day unsupported expedition race in a remote outback location covering over 700km. Phew! News of the success spread quickly and XPD was invited into the Adventure Racing World Series. The second edition of XPD in 2006 was even more ambitious with teams crossing the entire state of Tasmania. Subsequent editions in the Whitsundays, NSW/VIC High Country, Cairns and the Flinders Ranges have been incredibly popular, both locally and internationally, with entries selling out in 24 hours.

Geocentric Outdoors re-located it's office from Canberra to sunny Brisbane in Dec 2003. It became quickly apparent that Queenslanders had very few local adventure races. The Adventure Racing Queensland (ARQ) Series, including the Hells Bells 24hr adventure race was created. This series ran over three years and built a strong base of adventure racers in the South-East. Exciting opportunities and the need for a larger commercial premises saw Geocentric Outdoors move to the Sunshine Coast and take on a number of additional staff. In a busy few years many new events were created including the Bribie Island Multisport, Insomnia 24hr mountain bike festival, the 8hr Enduro, the 6hr Enduro, City Raid and Geocentric Corporate Adventures.

A recent change of direction has seen a focus back on Adventure Racing. In particular by taking over the management of the Adventure Racing World Series. This has also involved the production of the television series filmed of the AR World Series.

The AR World Championship 2016 trophies were made by Shoalhaven artists out of regional timbers and symbolising elements of the expedition course. Below is some information about the significance of the three elements of the trophies and the timbers used: FOREGROUND, Florence head, at the southern end of Little Forest Plateau and scene of the infamous hike a bike down the cliff. The blond coloured timber is Black Butt, a fairly common timber which (when plentiful) was used in general construction. Florence head was named after Surveyor Florence who surveyed much of the district in the early days of European settlement. MIDDLE DISTANCE, Pigeon House Mountain, an iconic local landmark, named by Captain James Cook as he sailed up the NSW Coast in 1770. On some of the trophies artists used Forest Red Gum for this feature. This was the dominant species on the Milton Monzonite soil. In other trophies they used Red Iron Bark, a very hard and heavy timber from the west side of the Budawangs. These two timbers are also used for the bases of the trophies. REAR, Castle Mountain, where teams ascended to access the Budawangs trek. The Castle was named for its castle-like appearance and first climbed in 1948. The timber used is Australian Red Cedar (Toona ciliata). This valuable joinery and furniture timber was one of the primary incentives for Europeans to settle in the local area and for many years was an important local export. Although it was found through South and East Asia down to Australia, Milton was the southern extremity of its range. It was found in the rainforest valleys around Milton, where some legally protected trees can still be seen.
