Shout out to the 60 secondary college students on campus today taking part in a United Nations Model Conference on the issue of climate change. Each school group is representing a different country and advocating for climate solutions in relation to their best interests. Fascinating discussions, our future is in great hands. The conference is in association with the UNAA, La Trobe’s Department of Politics and Philosophy and the College of Arts, Social Science and Commerce Secondary School Outreach. Outreach advisor Jenny Snelling said the conference offered experiences to build skills relevant to schools, university study and the workforce. "Students step into the shoes of country ambassadors and use skills of negotiation, diplomacy, dialogue and negotiation, present their assigned country’s position and move amendments to a draft resolution, Jenny said. Thanks Press 1 for the great photos.

We posed a well-worn question to Master of Teaching student Troy Firebrace this week; Are you related to Isaiah? “Hey, yes, I’m related,” he said. Turns out Australia’s Eurovision contestant is a cousin of our La Trobe student. Isaiah made the Eurovision finals in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Troy says he caught the news just as he was flying out the door to come to uni. “It makes me feel proud of our name, and it’s great that my cousin is being recognised for his talents,” Troy said. “I want him to go as far as he can and become a household name. I just feel proud of him. “It’s also good for the Indigenous community. We can do whatever we want if we just put our minds to it.” Right now Troy is turning his attention to assignment three in his course. Having graduated from a Bachelor of Creative Arts this year, Troy plans to use the extra qualification to teach art in schools or a private studio. Only 1.2 per cent of Australian teachers are Indigenous. “And imagine how many of those are male,” Troy said. “It’s fantastic that I’m going down this route with my qualification.”

Shirley Godwin from the Indigenous health unit spoke to first-year speech pathology students last week about working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as a speech pathologist. “Small efforts make an enormous difference,” she said. “Wherever they work, our students will work with Torres Strait Islander and Indigenous people and among those communities there’s such diversity, there’s no set of dos and don’ts that suit everyone. In saying that, if you’re already practicing a person-centred approach to care, you’re kind of already there.” Our speech pathology course is working to integrate culturally safe and sensitive practices into the curriculum with a much greater focus. #speechpathology
